EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Good morning

Thanks to those who replied. My goose situation figured itself out. She came off the nest last night and went in the coop!

I am going to check for eggs when I get home from OT so there isn't anything for her to sit on. Hope everyone has a good day.

Back when I used to live in more populated areas, I had a neighbour that absolutely loved to mow... There could be just the barest hint of green, and sometimes temps weren't even above freezing that day, and he'd be out there, shirtless, mowing the muddy lawn. If there was no grass, he did other things involving the lawn tractor.
OCD I would think.

I've figured that for the last yr, know people that work there. Sears already sold the exclusive rights to the Craftsman brand and have Diehard and Kenmore for sale also. The main head honcho of the company has spent over a hundred million$$ in the last few yrs of his own personal money just to keep them goin and they haven't been out of the red in like eight yrs.
Sad to see them go but I don't see how they can keep going.
They'll be just a memory like Jamesway and Ames soon.
Founded in 1886, life was all about the mail order catalog in much of the country through most of the 1900s.
Amazing.

Man - the snake pictures freaked me out. We have so many kinds of snakes here, I definitely don't want to run into one.
They startle me if I encounter them unexpectedly but then I get over it. In 65 years of encountering lots of snakes, I've never been bitten. I came close a couple times recently.
Like the time I reached inside the garage door to turn a light on and not feeling the switch I peered around the corner to see a big snake coiled on top of the switch box.

...
You plant alfalfa for your chickens?
Sounds like they are well fed.
...
That and dandelions are a couple of the few things that, once established, the chickens can't really kill.

I need goose advice. My girl went broody by a tree across the pond. I dont like leaving them out at night. if I take her eggs tomorrow when she comes off the nest will it mess her up? I've never had a broody goose before!
The only geese I have experience with are wild Canadians.
Depending on the time of year, if you take their eggs, they may lay another clutch. A little later in the season they'll give up and wait till next year.

@daxigait

are you on your trip? anyone know when she goes?

I did finally place my order at MPC!

Thank you all
I think her trip is in the middle of summer.

Edit: @BantyChooks
Honas are done. 11 chicks hatched, 2 with leg problems. 6 were alive at lockdown and died. 2 internally pipped then died. So 11 of 19.

@ChickenCanoe

I changed the feed a couple weeks ago anticipating these results. How long before I test hatch again?

I was getting low rates on my shipped eggs, so I wanted to be sure. I was feeding Dumor layer pellets and switched to feather fixer layer pellets. It was the easiest thing to test first because it was the easiest fix. You had mentioned that average layer feed nutritionally wasn't enough for strong hatching.
Feather Fixer is a little higher in protein and a little lower in calcium than the Dumor layer pellets. I'm not sure how much higher the vitamins/minerals in it are than other layer feed.
It probably wouldn't hurt to give a vitamin/mineral supplement about once a week. Just don't overdo it. Too much of a good thing is a bad thing.

Not sure what happened in the bator but one bulb is out and the fan isn't turning. It's just a chick hospital at the moment, but I only have a couple days to figure it out.
A coincidence? Likely the fan failed because of dust.

Very dirty. I can't seem to get it clean? I've tried canned air and wiping it off, but neither is very effective b
I had a bank of 4 cheap low power fans in my hatcher. After about 6 hatches (especially a nasty goose hatch) only one was still working full speed and one just barely turning.
I bought beefier fans with filters and they're working great now.

So. It's a bardrock egg so it's a little dark but all of my eggs look like that and one of them is a clear egg, my temp is 1105 and humidity is 60% to 65%
barred rock
drop the humidity

While I don't LOVE it, I don't really mind doing it - but it gets to be a big job when the "grass" (green weeds) is growing so quickly. I really have to keep up with it in the back because among the stuff I'm mowing down are small seedlings/saplings of mesquite and other trees. It's the key to keeping the cleared areas clear and therefore useful. I mowed most of the afternoon today - and Puppy followed along after me catching all the bugs startled by he mower. Smart girl.

So, after all the rain and then brooder cleaning this morning, the rest of the day looked like this:

- Ant Farm

My mower is down right now. Drive belt broke. I have to get it going this week or I'm in trouble.
I'm thinking it's a boy.

Depends on the breed and the age. Do you have others of the same breed and age to compare it to?
