EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Morning all, Hope all are well.

Looks like a lowes run after work to grab some light sockets. Finished the wiring up on the bator last night and let it run all night. Checked it this morning and it was at 87.5 with a wide open thermostat. Heat elements just arent putting out enough heat for the volume. Should have listned and went with the lightbulbs in the first place.

It's coming together nicely but initially I will probably only have the original racks that came with it and will add a turner later.

Also, I'm considering the possibility of it being a incubator/hatcher. Had planned on it being strictly incubator and building a smaller but comparable unit for hatching but have about hit the limit of tolerance from the better half so we will see.

Not really sure why I wired the LED strip to connect at the bottom. Wiring it to connect at the top will be another project to tackle. Not very aesthetically pleasing the way it is now. I like clean and neat after completion and that just doesnt work for me after seeing the picture.
what is the element? looks good so far its huge what size is it?

If that top is styrofoam you could cut a larger hole & secure a piece of plexiglass in it with silicone.

It is all steel and holds heat very well. Temp went up to 124. I need to get it working first, I could make a plexiglass ring/spacer between the 2 halves for viewing. If I use it for incubating I could take a rotating motor put an arm on it with a wheel off a toy truck on the end since its round. Might have to incubate in cartons then. But for now do I change the wafer or is it a rely issue?

Can't seem to find the dimensions now, I had posted them here back awhile ago. Roughly 5'HX4'WX2'D. Yeah it's pretty big.

Heating elements were off amazon but they aren't available anymore. Like aren't even showing on the website as not available?? Not sure what that means, when I bought them last month they had 250W, 500W, and 1000W. I was concerend when I first opened them because of size(.5"X4") but I decided to give it a go and see what happened.

My turkey eggs in the incubator ARE A GO!!!! like 6/10 are fertile and developing. One of the developed eggs, has cracks, so I liquid bandaged it and put it in my incubator where I could keep a closer eye on it.

All the other eggs are developing and alive.

I dunno *** I was thinking.
Awesome!!!

I just set 8 turkey eggs.

good luck!!

RALPHIE what part of your brain got contused according to the CT scan? The front (personality) or the back (vision)?

And oh yea if you get another head injury don't take aspirin!!!!!
this sounds like a trick question, lol
and yeah that was the only thing i kept saying to myself, seriously ASPIRIN!!

Something like that. My daughter stuck some in the incubator, too. and didn't tell me how many she found. her "hey, I found an egg and put it in the incubator" turned into "where did these 10 eggs come from."
LOL!! shes a smart girl!!

DD said "mama look! A fluffy train!"
cute!!
Thanks! We have been through 2 washers and dryers since we moved here 3 years ago (one from them and one of ours we held on to "just in case"). My cousins never put in a water softener system or an iron remover and it majorly screwed up a lot of things. We finally got one in this past year. Our washer is on it's last leg and the dryer is taking forever to dry! So bit the bullet and got the one I wanted (kinda). The front loaders are cool but I hear nightmares about mold and leakage so got a huge, nice top loader and matching dryer. Have to have somebody come out to hook them up since we have propane but they are here and ready to go! will be nice to see the difference. I used to get excited about designer clothes and jewelry and now all it takes are good appliances and chickens! ahhh what my life has come to

Hi Kaj! The comp doctor says I am fully disabled now with less than 1 lb weight restriction but somehow magically in a couple weeks doing nothing different (my surgeon still saying I need a 2nd surgery but he can't do it until the figure out what is going on with my circulation) I can go back to my regular job with no restrictions. I'm still losing color and feeling and a lot of pain but my OT lady has helped me start to pinpoint "triggers" that may be causing the problems! When I lost all color, I had my wedding ring on for the first time and they did red light therapy or put a heavier heat pad or any type of lotion,it reacts. i also cant wear anything with cuffs or a watch or bracelet and prolonged repeated motion that causes pain triggers the hypersensitivity or vasospasm. She has modified some therapy and focused more of lymphatic drainage to help the swelling and though it isn't much better we can avoid the triggers. I see the surgeon on Tuesday to see what he says in regards to a treatment plan or further evaluation as to what is going on. Thanks for asking and caring

Remember this chick?

Looks like this today.

Now, off the ridiculously high temps you live in... I have a medical type question maybe on of you can answer..

Lets say some one tried to take a blood sample from a victim. The victim happens to be a Royal Palm hen with very fine veins and the idiot taking the blood used too big of a needle. How long do you think it would be before another attempt is made?

Also lets say just for sake of argument, this idiot blew the veins in both wings and not just one?
LOL, trying to kill your bird Ralphie??
All caught up looks like lots of fluffy butts came out today. We are having our first thunderstorm, normally means we don't get anymore snow. @kwhites634 I know what it is like to have to run a saw and wanting to. No better therapy than the smell of a 2-stroke so loud you can't hear anyone. Keep your eyes on target and your feet under you and there safer than most people think. Plans to setup a second incubator I acquired last winter and never run yet. I have people asking for barnyard birds. I have turkey set in the other with room for marans that should be here in a couple weeks. Foley Line BLRW chicks coming about the same time. Hope the back works out the kinks cause I need to tackle that redwood incubator and turn it into a hatcher in 20'ish days. So far steroid injections have done nothing, well maybe made things worse.
my husband said the 1st and 3rd did nothing but now 2 years later he is still waaaaaaaay better than he was

Just harvested another Chaga mushroom yesterday

you eat cow turds? that thing looks gross, but i think i have a bunch out in my woods

Day 18 and I'm locked down. I only had to toss 3 at day 7 and I haven't had to toss out any more. No saddle-shaped air cells, which is blowing me away. Aside from a power outage, this hatch has gone incredibly well. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.

good luck!!!

Thank you for the coffee, Abi!

...

I had a schedule change and have to wait until Thursday to candle the classroom eggs now.

I bought chicken feed yesterday and forgot it was still in the back of the car until it was time to leave for work today. Thought I would grab the bags real quick and take them to the bin I keep them in. Went over and took the lid off of the bin, set it down and proceeded to walk to the car to grab the first bag of feed. That is when I felt IT. Something inside my shirt! I dropped the bag of feed, pulled my shirt away from myself and discovered a HUGE GINORMOUS FLYING COCKROACH inside my shirt! I have never stripped so fast of my clothing (outside even)! Now I feel like I have creepy crawlies all over me and have hives on my stomach area (I'm allergic to cockroaches). Moral of this story is: don't leave the chicken feed in the car overnight. And thank goodness, I live in the middle of nowhere and no one saw me throwing clothes off outside this morning!
i'm with everyone else, pics or it didnt happen lol
but

thats gross

Hi everyone. I am back from the Dr. He was very receptive today and my hand was not in good shape. Based on his exam, the photos of my hand turning blue, my OT's notes & conversation she had with him and the independent eval, he feels that in fact we are dealing with RSD. I am starting new medications and treatment for this. On top of hearing the "official" diagnosis, comp and disability are being difficult and I am extremely overwhelmed. I will be taking a break for a bit to process all this. I will be ok. Thank you for your friendship and continued thoughts and prayers during a very difficult time for me. Hopefully a day or so of rest will get me back to "normal". I'm just out of it right now

Migraine continued through the evening and overnight and into today, so I stayed home, in pain in bed until about 3:30. Horrible day. But I was able to get up and get the necessary stuff done. Discovered that the severely stunted and "not normal" chick in the S&G NN brooder had been attacked badly, big wounds near vent. Tried some first aid, but when I took him back, it was clear that there was a good chance of him being eviscerated overnight (probably because he's abnormal). I ended up culling him (he was 1/4 the size of the others and not quite right). It was necessary, but is always a little bit sad.

sorry about the chick but those are very pretty birds!!

As still in my 1st year of hatching eggs/ having chickens. My silkie/Cochin just hatched her first babie!!! I was so excited! But my question is... do I need to keep mom and baby away from my older chickens or will she be ok to take "it" out and about around the big chickens
Congrats! She should watch over them if you did not seperate her for hatching i wouldnt do it now unless you see her not watching the baby and it getting pecked on
congrats Seth!! and 50/50 chance it will be a frizzle too!

It's been a bit since I've posted, and I'm so excited! Our first quail baby hatched!
congrats! so cute!!

So I had to assist with the hatch of some very hard shelled, very shrink wrapped chicks last night. I used bacitracin zinc on the membrane instead of water and now, the next morning, the chicks that seem to be okay aren't dry because it got on their feathers. They look a mess and I'm worried. I washed them and put them back in the inky to dry before I left for work but I'm really worried. What do I do?
nothing yet, if not fluffy wash again in a few days, just dont get water in nostrils

Hi all,
I have a question for you.
I am hatching some eggs for a family member that lives 1 hour away.
I would like to transport the eggs(yes eggs, not hatched chicks) to her before they hatch. Strange as it may seem, her kiddos want to see them hatch.
Now before you say I should have planned better, save your breath. I know, I know, prior planning was not done!!!
I have no problem with this transporting to her, however I am not sure at what point the embryo could handle a little movement. I have a inverter that will plug into my car, so I will be able to keep them in the brinsea octogan incubator.
The temp is no problem. My issue is with the embryo and when it is able to withstand some movement. Of course it would have been easier to have started them at her house, but why make things easy on me??
They are on day 5, and all are developing nicely so far.
Also if anyone has done something crazy like this, how did you wrap them to protect them from too much jarring.
Any help appriected
-Nellie
you have received some great advice so, GOOD LUCK!!!

Hey, Sally, how goes it? I'm cross posting. Looking for some expert advice regarding an unabsorbed yolk. Should I cull, or should I wait a bit? Huge chick, no wonder he wasn't able to make it out.

So here's my question: Of the 2 chicks on the half shell, one made an exit last night, and was dangling an unabsorbed yolk that was about 3/8" in diameter. As of this morining, if it has receded any, it's not much. The chick is active and moving pretty good. My question is: should I wait, and see if it completely recedes? Of course he's been dragging it through all the stuff in the bottom of the bator. No way to keep something like that clean. I did swab around the umbilicus with betadine. Should I cull now, or wait it out. Looking for response from folks who have had similar circumstances, time frame, treatment, and what the outcome has been.

As for the other chick on the half shell: she popped out and is a bit crusty around the edges. But her feet and her belly look good.

This brings my hatch rate to 90% if the yolk belly and the DIS are counted as losses.

Hatch rate if yolk belly makes full recovery is 95%.
put in coffee cup so it cant drag it around anymore, and apply neosporin

I have found they either make it or not.

I do set them in a deep egg carton (egg hole) and try to keep them upright and alone (if I have entered the hatcher) Otherwise I leave them up to their fate. Let God decide if they live or die.

Good luck.

Do any of you hatch in the incubation egg trays? I have been thinking about it but worry they will get stuck on riught edges, cut and die. I am running out of foam egg cartons to cut up and use and they either fall apart or stick after a couple uses ( I disinfect and clean them with bleach, which seems to eat the foam)..
i hatch in quail rails

dishwasher safe too

I acquired This old incubator. It's a sturdy one. I have been attempting to acclimate it for 3 days. Seems it is all on or all off and will not hold temp. I am guessing a bad wafer? Also my turner will not fit so for the first time ever I will be turning by hand if I get the thing fired up. Should I open and turn each egg or put some books under one side of the incubator and move them to the opposite side 3 times a day? If this thing had a better window I think it would make a better hatcher than an incubator.
neat!! try new wafer and add some heat sinks, it should help

If that top is styrofoam you could cut a larger hole & secure a piece of plexiglass in it with silicone.

It is all steel and holds heat very well. Temp went up to 124. I need to get it working first, I could make a plexiglass ring/spacer between the 2 halves for viewing. wonder if you could salvage parts out of a microwave for a turner. the plate inside is probably close to the correct size.
