EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Lots of stuff - folks in our neighborhood have taught gardening classes, art classes, and recently they invited the Humane Society to come do a dog obedience class. And it'll be a place to meet, etc. We had to raise money to tear town the old neighborhood clubhouse (which was sorta a hazard) and are working bit by bit on the construction of the center as we raise the funds.

San Antonio does something every year called "The Big Give" where on one day in early May, they encourage EVERYBODY to give to a charity of their choice. We did pretty well last year (given how small our neighborhood is), and they are planning for this year's Big Give.

Mornin Sally. Doom and Gloom here. Crappy hatch for the EHAL. Alot of external pips but no progress. I have a 0% success rate on assisting. Time to do a deep clean on the styro and re-paint to try and figure out whats going on. Hatch rates have significantly declined the past 2 hatches with no other changes as far as birds or eggs. The big DIY bator is currently at a standstill also. Added 2 40 watt bulbs to increase temp. I think that worked but I dont have enough circulation. I bought a 4 pack of computer fans off amazon(only currently using 2). But I dont think they are putting out enough airflow to distribute the air. Plan to add higher flowing fans or build some ducting to route the hot air towards the bottom and back up. On a plus not, bought 6 new leghorn's from TSC last weekend and got 4 more from the auction this past weekend. And my broody should be close to hatching her eggs(today/tmrw) timeframe. That should be a decent comaparison due to the fact she has the same eggs under her that were in the bator. Time will tell.
what in the world! what humidity do you use for hatch? did you eggtopsy? did they have yellow jelly in them? I bought huge computer fans for the upright cooler, wonder if they would work? details of what they are here Cabinet Coolerbator do you have any sorta duct like I put for the big cooler? thinking you know we just put a vent fan in our floor... hang on a second brb when I find what I am thinking.
Haven't eggtopsied yet, still have a few eggs that haven't done anything yet so I'm giving them another day or so. I will let you know when I do. I have spent a considerable amount of time on your coolerbator thread and am familiar with the shelf set up. The fan in the duct looks interesting and could possibly work. Just kinda burned out with it at the moment. It'll get done and I will figure it out but it's taking too much of my time at the moment. Getting ready to head into the busy season with family coming to visit and the honey do list is stacking up. We visit faimly during winter and they visit us spring and summer.
Forgot to add humidity for hatch I shoot for around 50-60 at lockdown and once they start pipping it jumps to around 70. That is what has worked in the past. It bugs me due to the fact that I had gotten up to 80-90% hatch rates for a couple months in a row. Havent changed anything since and now I'm in the 20-30% range.

I better get to gettin, Dad called in a panic, "da# hen has no feathers on her back above her tail, I am just gonna eat them all"

I am taking the day to get more done on the building. Doctor's appointment in the afternoon, then community fund raising meeting this evening. (I don't usually "join in" like that, but this is my neighborhood and we are building a community resource center - I've given them a bunch of money, figured I should probably cough up a little time as well.)

(9 posts since I started typing - that's more like it...)

I think so! and thank you

That is so great Kristin! What all will the community center do?

Kristin, you're no lightweight, you just actually get stuff done during the day. <>
Sometimes - you're reminding me that I need to stop refreshing this thread and go work on that lumber already.

Quote: Argh! Rotten timing - I have a doctor's appointment this early afternoon, and it's one of those where it usually takes forever. If things change I'll text you, though. Red Lobster sounds so good to me. (Am I weird to want clam chowder for breakfast?!
