How long is an egg considered a pullet egg? the youngest hens are 2-3 months into their laying cycle.

Storage for this batch was 2 weeks tops and they were on the turner outside of the incubator prior.

Nutrition is a combination of purina flock raiser, scratch grains, and BOSS all free choice. Also free range time almost everyday for around 3-4 hrs.


I suspect if I had explained the process my daughter would have been interested and been able to handle it. I think it was more a question in my mind if I could do it and didnt want the added stress of her asking questions and distracting me. Maybe next time. My son would have probably chosen not to be a part of it.

there have been studies that you have more DIS, late deaths in pullet eggs

after 10 days in storage hatchability decreases much more quickly @Akrnaf2
 knows the numbers better BUT i think each day from 1-7 it drops by like 5%, 7-10 it drops by like 8% then after day 10 the hatchability drops like 20% per day

flock raiser is good but @ChickenCanoe
 can give better advice than i in this field BUT
get rid of the scratch and up their other vitamins and minerals

Hmm interesting, based on the 1 year/molt standard then the majority of those would be considered pullet eggs. I wasn't sure of the timeframe for when a pullet was a hen.

The scratch will not be continued(I had already decided I was done with it), and the BOSS is next on the chopping block(they seem to enjoy it but waste way too much of it. I have a 3 tube PVC bulk feeder and all the BOSS winds up in a pile in front of the feeder). They eat it but seriously about 2-3 days after I fill it theres a huge pile in front of the feeder that disappears at the same rate as the flock raiser.

 

And how exactly is this helping me get out of this hole I dug?

Busy morning had to drop the boys at school today. Then took the flat bed truck to pick up a load of pallets. Dr. Called and just now let the chickens out.

Compass: you are a total idiot if you step in the northern Wisconsin woods and swamps without one. There is some dense forest here that all looks the same so no reference points at all. I learned to use one at about 6 yrs old. Once we killed a large black bear in the middle of a vast trac of land. Not sure exactly where we were in the section we decided to head west because we couldn't miss the river. My uncle took the tracking collar off one dog and put it on the field dressed bear. So with each of us having 2 dogs leased we headed west. Long story short it was one of those nights you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. I cuddled 2 stinky hounds took a nap and we found the river just after first light.

Dr. Call: upped rx to 1,200 mg gabapentin, 200mg Celebrex, and tizanidine as needed up to 8mg. Next steroid shot scheduled for 5-5.

@DwayneNLiz. The fan came out of the boys hockey table they had broken. It was made of cheap pressboard (aka beaver puke) .

@ChickenCanoe I have no idea how many miles the pack trip is so I can only estimate. It is more than four hours a day.
As to Yellowstone, I only concentrated on keeping the daily totals reasonable.

Let's see. Day one is a morning day or fanny pack hike of 3/3.5 rated easy mostly paved witbout steep sections, and a 1.5 mile moderate afternoon because it has some steps.
Day two has a one mile hike early in the day with no pack to the big tourist spot Tower Falls rated easy, and then I get my full pack for six miles to campsite one. Day three is eight miles. Day four 2.6 out with pack, Mammoth has 1.75 miles, but you can choose lesser loops day/fanny pack. Artist paintpots 1.2 easy loop fanny pack.
Day five up to five at Old Faithful day/fanny,
Rest of day five and morning of day six easy/moderate five miles (3.4 on day five).
So thirty miles total in five days. Just over half with a pack.
Anything on day six is voluntary with a day hike 2.4 the easiest.

i like when things ship saturdays, maybe you can ship on saturday for a monday delivery

The post office will not accept chicks on a Saturday, the want them early in the week so they can make their destination without traveling over a weekend. If you go to the USPS site they lay it out really clearly. A Thursday for Saturday would be doubtful the way I read it.

my 5yo has helped me eggtopsy

My 5 year old is awesome. She will round up all the chickens & get them into the run sometimes, even the English Orpington that's almost as big as a turkey. She has no fear. She is gonna be a vet someday or a farmer. If I have to give the chicken medicine or something, she is the one who will hold it for me.

My 10 year old, on the other hand, just lets the chicken go & says, "I couldn't hold it; it wanted to get down!" He is very tender-hearted, lol.

I am so excited, I found someone to board a cockerel for me this Summer! So I'll be able to hatch my own eggs for the first time in the Fall! Now I have to decide which cockerel to keep....For breeding purposes I probably should keep the chocolate one, since I have 2 black hens and a splash. But I really like the personality of the Jubilee boy. If my other Jubilee chick ends up being a pullet I think I will keep them as a pair.

Nathan, I find rinsing the chicks off in water w/o uncurling them helps make malpositions easier to spot in photos. Can't tell from these... Will look again once I'm at a place with a few computer and a nice big screen. Just a word of warning, the water pressure from the tap might make their eyelids open, which is a bit creepy.

Agree - I was having a hard time seeing. There is, I think, a link with sketches and descriptions of the different types of malpositions in the links and notes. I had several in one of my hatches (where the turner wasn't working right - I only hatch in that incubator now), and I did the eggtopsies. They're supposed to have their head/beak under one wing (I think the left, but I may have that backwards). If they have the head under the OTHER wing, or if the head is OVER the wing, or other type positions as well, those are specific malpositions and there is info on how often they hatch - some aren't bad, others are very bad. (For instance, it made me feel a little better when one that pipped and died before zipping had a malposition that was noted to have very rare survivability.) If you look at the diagrams and photos and then at your eggtopsies, you'll be better able to understand what you're looking at, but it's all about where the head and beak are compared to the rest of the body.

It is a sort of sad thing to do even if your stomach is strong. I've stopped doing it (though I would if I had an unexplained very bad hatch, of course).

OK I got a bit off last night starting day five.

Day five starts with Old Faithful and the five miles of Upper Geyser Basin trail(s). Loaded with geysers and many of the most famous features and very much a tourist area.
That afternoon I will get my pack and head out through the Midway geyser basin that includes the Grand Prismatic spring (Google it). Then after seeing some lesser known features it is on to the 197' graceful Fairy Falls. I am going to follow the Fairy Falls trail to the Imperial Geyser trail going left .3 miles to see the Imperial and spray geysers before heading back on the trail to the north to campsite OD4 which is supposed to me about a quarter mile off the main trail with a nice view out into the Imperial Meadows a negative is this site very exposed to the elements so I hope there won't be any huge thunderstorms that night. Then in the morning I will complete the loop out to where I started it's a lollipop Loop.

Day six is my last day. After I complete the lollipop Loop out I have several options for day hikes including the hoodoos and the monument geyser Basin that I talked about earlier or even ice lake with The Wraith Falls. I may just look around some more features or something else that came to my attention. The late afternoon or evening I plan to spend at the Madison Campground which includes a swimming hole and places to fish nearby. Essentially a relaxing afternoon and evening before driving to the airport in the morning.

One egg that had a few pips hadnt changed. I took it out and opened up the pip. It was dead

no peeping or moving. If only i had intervened sooner

. Little later a toddler got in the room and opened the incubator. Thankfully i grabbed the toddler and closed the lid. But now i am worried sick. Will they be okay? How do i tell if the eggs are resting or if they need help?

I'm a bad person to ask, as I don't help out - whenever I've helped, the chicks haven't done well, and I've learned that they couldn't hatch on their own for a reason. (Not sure that helps you, just wanted you to know I wasn't ignoring your requests - other folks who help can give advice, and there's also some great notes on how to assist in the notes and links at the beginning of the thread if you haven't seen them already.)

I'm back from lunch with kajira and her littlest girl and oldest boy - Red Lobster (love that clam chowder). I needed a quick nap after that. Now heading out to get some more work done...

Thank you for the advice and warning on the eyes. I was huddled in my daughters bedroom, trying not to draw attention to myself. Both the older kids get it that stuff dies and sometimes life doesnt go as we expect but I decided that might be a bit much for a 9 and 10 year old. Heck it was almost too much for me. She caught me towards the end(after I had cleaned up) and asked where the eggs went. I explained what had happened and I knew alot of really smart people and was going to see if we could figure out what might have happened with the hatch. She wasn't a fan, she would have been fine to leave the eggs for another cycle while holding on to hope they might hatch.

Why do chicks try so hard to screw up my life? I planted egg three weeks ago figuring the Legbars would go 22 1/2 days like always I wanted them to hatch late Saturday and Sunday for Mondays mail. I went to move them this morning and 3 were hatched (day 19) and most are pipped. So much for 2 days in the Hatcher to rest.... The turkey eggs also set for late Saturday are really active in their shells and three of them have external pips. The rest seem on target.. NO the temps were not high if anything a tad low in the bator they came out of. I only have 9 viable PC's I am hoping to get 8* for a friend. I put 10 toad eggs in, one is bad 9 look good!... Looks lke a decent hatch, which I really did not need. I had all the EE sold and the person backed out. I had to move her back 2 weeks because of the tornado we had she was not happy and told me where to put the chicks when I called her.. I am not sure I can put the chicks there, and whether that is animal cruelty or not...

I find sort of a sick fascination with it all, I just figger they're dead anyway.... Of course, by the time I give up on eggs, they're usually stinky enough to make one barf, and sometimes mouldy too.
