My Wife and I were married 44 years ago today...Had we known back then people were going to usurp our day we would have gotten married on the 4th,,,

Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867).

That seems to predate your 44 year marriage.
