EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Some of my dogs would probably at least scare them sometimes, but there are the neighbor's dogs too. I'd rather not risk it. Plus, my parents don't want them free ranging again - they want them far from the house.

My dogs chased a chicken once. ONCE.

After me screaming at them they haven't done it again. I've also trained them to basically act like there's nothing there when a chicken is around. "Leave it" is my favorite command.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but do ducks or chickens either one eat toads? A dog won't eat a toad; they can release a foul-tasting substance that most animals find extremely unpleasant. I can't imagine ducks or chickens being any different.

I'm not sure but I think so. We've got them here - I watched my ducklings fight over a frog a little brother had caught. Eventually they swallowed it whole, I think it was still alive. Lol

My dog is a stinker. She knows fine well she is not allowed to chase chickens, but she does it anyway.

Yes
Shhh, you weren't supposed to say that. :lau
Say what?

:tongue My coops are usually nice and clean and I rotate the chickens so the grass is always there.

My ducks did better at that than my chickens, only lost one duck to a predator where I lost 20 chickens to the same one.
I've left my chicken coop door open many nights, no the run isn't covered. I've had several of them sleep outside, including one girl spending the last 3 nights outside. Haven't lost a single one to predators and yes there are coons and possums in the area.

That's what I like about collies. They're super eager to please and they don't require a lot of punishment to get a point across. Nico's a bit stupid sometimes and looks at the bird shady (for which I have to remind him to "leave it") but Jaeger is either smart enough to not chase it or too lazy too.

When I'm there, three of my dogs are fine with most animals. One will let the ducks walk up in between her legs when she is laying down, eat, walk on her, anything. She won't move. I think if I wasn't there she would probably chase them. That dog is part BC, and she also likes to try herding sometimes.

Yes

Say what?

That it was actually duck meat. :hide

My chickens slept in trees or anywhere but the coop for years. I don't remember losing any to predators, or maybe just one or two. I forget...

Frogs & toads are two different animals

I know that. I was just saying I've seen them eat frogs, but I'm not sure about toads. :)

Yes it was duck meat.
Which makes them better at surviving and being more useful than ducks.
