EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Yeah, that's exactly the sort of thing I have in my back yard. I'll have to get photos... That's another reason I don't ever wear shorts...

I use the plastic ones for water, because the rubber ones smell funny to me, esp. when they get hot, and in the heat, I thought they would leach into the water and make it smell funny as well. Just my preference. I DO use the rubber ones for things like treats, soaked cat food (which I give them when molting), etc.

(EDIT TO ADD: The plastic ones are less tippable as well.)

:fl

Having breakfast, and then I need to weigh the S&G boys this AM before work/letting them out (well, weigh and more importantly, switch their leg bands, which have gotten too tight). Anticipating it will suck a bit since they are kinda big. (I do it in a bucket with a hanging scale.)

Ahhhh....thanks for explaining. They do stink when new! I have been using them mostly for water. Last summer the shallow 1-gallon pans were used primarily as foot coolers. In winter they became cat sunbeds. I've bought some smaller ones to use with fermented feed and one of their plastic buckets for the ducks to drink from.
I shall have to think more about chemical leaching.
Thank you.

:barnie I swear I keep hearing pipping coming from the incubator. It's empty.

That happens to me all the time as well. So now I just keep the thing full that way I'm not crazy right?

I have an antique hanging scale maybe I'll weigh some of mine.

In my mind it was less about worrying about chemical leaching per se, and more that if it made the water smell or taste bad they wouldn't drink it or drink enough...

@Fire Ant Farm How are those different than prickly pear?

These have much smaller pads (that photo was in a little 4 or 6' pot) - prickly pear are these giant things and also in prickly pear, you can see the thorns more easily. In the bunny ear cactus, it truly just looks soft and fuzzy until you grab it because they are so small. (Prickly pear are weeds here, and so hard to get rid of because even a single pad that falls to the ground will root. There's actually an additional surcharge when taking your brush to a recycling place if it includes prickly pear.)

Morning all.

@BantyChooks My broody hatched out 3 chicks on Sunday. She abandoned the rest of her eggs. I candled and 2 had internal pips, 6 had died in the shell. I put the 2 with internal pips in my incubator and they hatched yesterday afternoon. So my broody has 3 chicks and I have 2 in the house. Hoping she will accept them tonight when I try after dark. This morning she was not accepting of them.

@Fire Ant Farm I'm glad you posted this weekend about your shade shelters. I had not thought of that and I'm going to get some cinder blocks and plywood to make some for my chickens. Thanks!
