EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I had an eventful morning. Great big GIANT hawk (Gosh, was it an eagle?!) was looking for a chicken dinner. I was out changing out the water this morning before work (since it's going to be a super hot day) when it happened. Hated how impotent I felt, just stood around and watched, and yelled and waved my hands when it would swoop. It clearly didn't think I was worth even looking at. (And when it swooped, I honestly started thinking maybe *I* should take cover!) Not sure how well these pictures get across how large this was - wingspan was maybe 5 or 6 feet? Hard to estimate.

Fortunately, with the festooning of the top of the paddocks with all that flagging tape, and with the alerts being called out at high volume by ALL of the cockerels and roosters in the yard, everyone was under cover and no one got taken. Puppy (who was out in the open) also found cover quickly. It finally gave up and flew away after about 30 or 45 minutes. (I have the sense that this probably happens a lot while I'm at work, from the well orchestrated response.)

Glad your birds were safe. That bird didn't look like it cared what you thought.

That's a hawk, albeit a large one. You were save though, they are not fond of eating Cajun.....

It absolutely did not. I began to worry it was going to come after me - it was BIG.

Hello!

I NEED SOME HELP FAST!
I was away for most of today and when I got home I found that a chick had "Hatched" but two problem it wasn't moving, and the brody had left the nest. in a panic I dropped the egg basket (thankfully empty) and ran to get some help. After about 5 minutes of ado I showed the half hated chick to my father not knowing if the poor thing was alive or not. My father told me that it was probably alive so what i then did is I gave it to another broody (Rainbow, who has a VERY good temperament) and she took it without a fuss and put it under her wing.
Is there anything else I can do? Can I get any advice? I'm really scared that I might lose it (If I haven't already XD) please help!

I don't have advice that comes from experience here (not using broodies) - you might want to ask on the Old Fashioned Broody thread while seeing if anyone pipes up here. But I suspect that Rainbow may be the best shot the chick has, and can probably do better with it than you could have arranged. Keep an eye on it, and maybe give Rainbow and her chicks some water with electrolytes in it for the day so this chick will get some... Just my thoughts.

I've been reading up on selective reduction, in case the pregnancy turns into a worst case scenario. I really shouldn't have done that until I knew for sure it was something we even had to talk about. I can't stop crying after seeing pictures and reading how they do it. I made myself sick to my stomach :(

I'm going to go hug my geese now.

I wish I had gotten pictures of my hen all soaked and bedraggled. She is on of the top two hens and while normally very pretty she is a bit haughty. It was funny.

Time for chores bbl.

Those are always awesome to see. We had one here couple years ago it however got three of my Orpingtons. Couldn't or didn't fly away with them and didn't eat but the back bone area. Prehistoric looking, for sure.
:frow
I'll be checking in on them in a minute or two. There's quite a few eggs they aren't setting now with today's temps it won't matter much. Probably put rest into incubator
