EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I am FURIOUS!!! and writing to brinsea about it!!

look at this thing!!

All the hatch down is INSIDE the double lid that has a zillion screwed to be removed to clean the dang thing!!! wtfreak!! how on earth can they sell something that does that????

that's just unsanitary and to expect a buyer that spends almost 600 bucks to unscrew all that take apart just to sanitize it is freaking nuts!!!

PLUS they are getting splayed leg from the bottom part!! I added a towel but it said I don't need anything in the bottom because it has some sorta molded squares in the bottom!! ughhhhhhhh

Sally! Banty! hey quick question... Are the weights of a pre incubated eggs supposed to weigh more than when weighed later DURING incubation? (day 15) I thought they would weigh more not less.. They are averaging 4 to 6 grams less than when they were set.. :pop
@Sally Sunshine @BantyChooks

Not sure if it is my scale is failing..

Good question!

They are supposed to lose weight--Eggs are a fairly closed system so stuff does not get into them from the outside. The egg does dry out and the developing embryo uses the nutrients in the white and yolk to grow. The conversion breaks matter down which cause weight loss too.

Species Incubation Period (Days) Ideal Loss Over Incubation Period ApproximateHumidity Incubation Temperature Turn Angle
Chicken 21 13% 40 to 50% 37.5°C 90°
Runner Duck 28.5 14-15% 35 to 40% 37.3°C 90°
Call Duck 26 13% 35 to 40% 37.3°C 90°
Geese 28 to 35 13% 35 to 40% 37.2°C 180°
Ostrich 40-43 12-15% 20 to 40% 36.4°C 90°
Table 1 – Hatching conditions showing weight loss for different species.

An example weight loss calculation.
The following example shows how this method can be put into practice when hatching chickens. Chickens have a 21 day incubation period and an ideal weight loss at the point of pipping of 13%.

Set the incubator to the correct temperature (in this case 37.5°C), and allow it to settle for a few hours, then, set it to the correct humidity for the species (in this case 45%).

Allow 24 hours for everything to settle. During this time, if eggs have travelled through the post, leave them to rest and to reach room temperature. Store them pointed end facing downwards.

On day 1, number the eggs with a soft pencil to identify them. Weigh all eggs before putting them into the incubator with a digital scale. Record the results:

Egg Number Weight (Grammes)
1 62.5
2 65
3 64.5
4 60
5 59
6 65.5
Calculate the average batch weight, to do this, add up all of the weights, then divide this number by the total number of eggs so for the example eggs above this is:

(62.5 + 65 + 64.5 + 60 + 59 + 65.5) / 6 eggs = 62.75g Average

See above, chicken eggs lose on average 13% over incubation

The live eggs lost from 4 to 6 grams.
The duds lost an even 2 grams.

what Ron said, and they EDIT (they meaning DIS or INFERTS) will be cooler to the touch (and temp if you take their temps individually) ;) I don't weigh, I always loose more than what is suggested and all eggs are so different that I set, some have large air cells some tiny at set, so I sorta move them around in the bator so that the ones that need more weight loss get more of the air flow and or heat if they don't seem as developed, although I have hatched a lot and can see these things, it takes a while to pick up on stuffs like that, but that's were we come in to help!
did you mark air cells at all from the start to now?
