EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Actually coming here for educational stuff!

Suggestions for preschool lessons with baby chicks? Chicks are shipping in one week. Kids are 2 and almost 5. I've got the brooder set up in the garage, with brooder plate and space heater (space heater next to brooder.)

Best video for that age: (short & not "icky")

Egg dissection / parts of an egg. Everything has is specific form & function
Explain that the shell is hard because mother hen must sit on them for incubation (compare to soft reptile egg)
Yolk = food for embryo,
Egg Spot = potential embryo (compare to fertile & infertile egg)
Albumen = cushion
Chalazae - to keep the yolk in center
Membrane = allows air & water to pass through
Air cell - show how it grows as eggs get older because the water evaporates out

Use a baby doll with toy supplies & have the kids model the basic needs of a baby. Then compare/contrast the basic needs of a baby chick. Talk about how the mama hen cares for them & how you must care for them in the brooder.
(ie change diaper --> change bedding )

Chicken anatomy (eyes, ears, beak, nares/nostrils, comb, wings, shank, feet, count toes, chick down vs feathers, wattles when they grow in)

If you have a scale, you may want to make a growth chart by weighing them every few days or once a week (Use something like a Crayola marker, food coloring, or Rainbow Loom bands to mark a few birds so you can use the same ones)
* Make sure to also take photos of kids & their chicks when weighing.

All kinds of cute art projects:
