EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

The run isn’t doing so well. At least it’s still standing. A cross bar is down, and damage to the door.

I don't know exactly how you're laid out (the run, not you personally ;)), but would a hoop coop work for you? 3 cattle panels side by side would give you 12' x whatever width you made it, & you could have the coop inside, making it safer. Best of all, I bet you could do it all yourself, except the wire & whatever you use for shade.

I am going to be putting 30 eggs into lockdown today. I read the hatching 101 and saw the recommendation to lower the temperature at day 19. I've never done that before and I'm a little sceptical and scare to make that change. Is it really a good thing to do? I need some encouragement to actually do that!
You don't need to do it if you don't want to. I do, at least some times. It gives me a bit of wiggle room for temp changes due to humidity differences. There was a study that showed that it had benefits on the chick after hatch because of the slightly delayed process, but I can't find it now, my apologies. :( I will let you know if I find it.

I had temperature go down to 93 and refuse to budge during a lockdown in a temperamental LG. I got a 91% hatch rate.

This is all I found. The actual study links seem to have gone kaput.

Will a hen get off her eggs more for the last couple days to let the temps drop?

I have a regular cool down that I set on my incubator, but I turn that off at lockdown. I've never knowingly lowered the temps at lockdown. But, that tiny temp change certainly can't hurt. Make really good notes about this hatch, if things weren't perfect, try something different on your next one.

Whatever you decide - GOOD LUCK!!! Happy Hatching!
