EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I have a large hatch coming up on Sunday. And I have a question that I could really use some advice. Some of the eggs are mine, some my friends. As they are all hatching in the same bator (the other is in use and not on lock - down yet), is there a way I can safely open and mark the chicks? I was thinking a regular marker without odor, quickly making a mark on the chicks legs? Any thoughts, ideas?
If you're going to mark them, why not wait 'til you transfer them to the brooder? Don't know what effect, if any, the marker will have.

I’m sorry. To specifically answer the question asked, it’s okay to open the incubator quickly. Damage is done if the room temperature is too cold, and there are eggs pipped. The loss of humidity is an issue to watch.
You can use marker or use a drop of food coloring.

Most of the eggs are identical in size, and shape. I'm thinking of the handful that she specifically wanted. I believe they will be distinguishable from the others. But in the event the chicks are to similar, my thought was to mark them. I was also concerned about a marker wearing off. A drop of food color would hopefully work both for quickness and effect. The room is very warm, no drafts, so humidity would be the force against me, but a quick drop should hopefully work. Thank you!

I thought "the customer is always right?"

Oh my bad.. it's 2018.. I feel silly now. :he
