I just figured you were due for a good-natured cage rattling, and what were you doing still up @3:30? That emu keeping you up?
Thanks for the posies, but I don't know about me keeping it all together. It's not just me; I just happen to have the biggest mouth & the most time, and I miss this (and the original) being the most active thread on BYC.

The birds were all free ranging today. I went to close them up, and they were all piled on a tote I use to keep bedding in. I see them sit there during the day, but it’s the first time I’ve seen them sleeping there. It was cute seeing the small little pullets snuggled in between the big roosters.

Eumorpha pandorus, from the Sphingidae family. They are pretty cool dudes! We call them camo moths! haha.


Incubation question! What do you do or what causes air cells to be all different sizes?!? I've got big ones, small ones, medium ones and lopsided ones! All are in the same incubator and get rotated in positioning. All are around the same age (+/-2 days). Yeesh!

On the tip of a knife edge of a 100% ratio candled positive evaluation. I am recklessly nervous over number 30 out of lock down 30 confirmed viable. Limited sleep over chicks sold at penny's on the dollar but bragging rights have my history books ready to start a new chapter. BTW, I opened the lid 20 something times during the hatching.. I love Florida some times. I have pix. Just too tired...one struggling chick to go..

Older eggs tend to have larger air cells, but the thickness of the shell and how porous it is will determine how fast water evaporates from it.
Sometimes the air cell is lopsided if it has sat on its side a while after laying and before incubating - otherwise it is usually due to shipping damage.
Only other cause I can think of is if there are/were 2 chick embryos in the egg.

#30 0ut of possible 30 is out! Weak but out. Ahhh sleepless in Seattle was fiction. When I recover I'll bombard pix. It is weak, but not assisted. Splay leg and sticky umbilical cord hopefully controlled. I'm going to bed. Hopefully my 100% rate will be worth the damage to my brain cells from limiting my quality sleep time.

Excellent question. My dozen BCM eggs are exactly the same way. Well, except the 2 clears & 1 that appears to have quit early on. Mine were all laid the same day and stuck into the incubator, onto a turner, the following day. I just locked them down last evening, so we'll see what happens. I'd ordered the eggs a couple days earlier, & the young lady @ the family-run hatchery had them waiting for me when I got there, so no shipping involved. Since they were all laid that morning, I can only assume that they'd been placed in the neat little clear plastic mini-carton @ the same time. The only thing I can think of is the temp fluctuated a couple degrees either way in an incubator that had been holding steady @ 99.5* for 2 days prior to the introduction of the eggs.
