EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

Hope to work on coop today. Not having time to get started right away, ie wifes projects needed done first, I’ve come up with a little different design than what I started out thinking of doing. Since this coop doesn’t have the trees for shade that the rest do I’ll be extending the eaves of an eaveless truss design. I’ll probably get foil lined roofing plywood as well.

I've been busting pallets up, collecting material for a coop to replace the Chinese prefab I started with...this time. I've gone the pallet route before, with just a hammer & crowbar; that's too much like work. This time I spent the money for a Pallet Buster, from Amazon. Best 30 bucks I've ever spent. I figure it's paid for itself already in time & effort expended.

Nice I’ve often wondered if it was worth it. Both end trusses are set. Header material is warped so it will be a challenge to make square.

Why not buy new header material & use the warped stuff in shorter lengths?

If you're only breaking down a few pallets, I'd say it's not worth it. I have access to probably more than I can ever use, even after I use several intact pallets to keep the firewood up off the ground. The best part is that the forks are long enough to span the width of most pallet planks, making it less likely to split one as it's being loosened. The space between the forks is just enough to straddle the narrow edge of 2" stock. I've run into a couple pallets already where the 2x4s are doubled up. I'll use them for under firewood, rather than fight busting 'em down with a hammer & crowbar (oh, how quickly we get spoiled).

Hammer and crowbar :barnie:he
Too bad you can’t have access to the pallets I get. They are about 12 feet long by 5 feet wide basically a wall.
Trying to get by with little or no expense. 4x12’s are probably expensive. So I’ve made them into shorter lengths and took twist out. Also this set of trusses was built with a 2 inch taper top to bottom. Ya should have seen me trying to level them critters. It was a nightmare. I’m done for awhile on the coop. They are braced off now.

ETA now that I’m thinking about it part of the warped header is the taper in the truss walls. I had the trusses laying flat on header for a bit and due to taper I couldn’t get it to square up. That makes me feel better. However it is still warped.

Too hot to work out there now. Working on the lockdown incubator for two eggs. Started with 11 shipped. Not even sure the two are still going will candle tonight. Then I have some of mine a week past these 2 with a couple stragglers beyond them. Going to get busy with chicks again.

I kinda sorta broke my toe yesterday. Not like 45° angle break like a often do (major break fifteen years ago that would have required surgery to properly fix). No, this was a 90°, off to the side, “I can’t look!! :sick “ break. So the work I wanted to do between rain bursts is on hold.
Meanwhile, anyone know when I said my Muscovy went broody? I have no clue.
