EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

The wind ripped the cover of the run loose, and a pullet got out. Duckling fixed that by opening the coop for two more to get out, and then shutting the door, and spending forever chattering before telling me I had escapees. A fox (is suspected) has wiped out too much of the flock to risk free ranging, so I hurried down. The two hens were trying to get in the coop, but were too freaked out to make the whole thing very easy.

I let mine into a portable pasture when I'm around during the day, and I tried to give them a huge area but one of my net fences has bigger holes and the hens kept going through them. And then very few had any idea how to get back in. Once I found a light Brahma all by herself in the evening hunkered down next to the barn looking like a big white chicken dinner. Even the small-hole portion of the fence is only 3-3.5' tall! So I cut their space in half and am only using the small-hole fence. The OEGB hen knows exactly what she's doing, which is good because she can fit through just about anything lol.

(My portable fences were bought for goats so the bigger holes worked for them. I'm trying to use what I already have as much as possible. The secure run is enclosed in 6' chain link.)

I skipped the news tonight. I’m busy scaring myself with mask tutorials. If this thing lasts, I’ll need more than what I have.
I do believe a T-shirt you can see through isn’t a good material for a 2 layer mask. I actually would trust the paper towel mask first (if you think about it, the paper towel mask sounds okay).

Social Media can be ruthless.

Apparently Dettol is the same thing as Lysol here in the US>
Maybe we can all inhale Lysol and then we can reopen the country.
A 5 year old knows better.

Any mask is better than no mask. Have you seen the thing about making a mask out of a vacuum cleaner bag? That sounds like a good plan but crafty.

I heard about the vacuum bag, but thought it was just a liner. I’m hoping to find a few intelligent sounding people that can agree on a homemade mask pattern.
I will get you the pattern I use tomorrow. They are comparatively comfortable, easy to make, and have a filter pocket. I use the furnace filters rated for viruses. I can make 10 masks a day if the kids don't bug me. I do it assembly line style. But I need need to use my heavy duty machine because of the thick layers of fabric. My lighter, more modern machine could do it in a pinch with care, but my all-metal machine just zips through what other machines chew up.

My machine is lost somewhere. I do have an ancient one in the closet, but I’d be afraid of breaking it. It’s antique, and my knowledge of how it works is buried in the mind of the person I used to be. I’d have to hand sew or use a no sew pattern.

Want me to just send you one? I would be very happy to! I can send more than one, if you need, and I made kid sizes, too. Just message me your address of you want!

I hope your secure 6' chain link run has a top on it.
