I recently noticed that my 9 week old EE pullet is laying down on the ground a lot. She is eating, drinking, and walks around just fine. However, when im visiting with my flock in the coop, I notice she is often nestled in the corners or in the shade while the others are walking around/playing. We have plenty of roost areas and she rarely roosts as she prefers to lay on the ground. Google isnt helping much so I hope someone here can tell me if this is normal behavior or not.

I am not sure if this matters, but I have a pair of EE, so I also have a 9 week old EE Cockerel and he is large and active. Always scoping things out and keeping the others rounded up.

If your EE is eating, drinking, and walking around normal, then I suspect she is just fine. Lots of my chickens will rest on the ground during the day. They only roost at night.

You mentioned that she is sitting in the shade. It may be helpful if you added your geographic location to your bio and if you tell us what the temp is where you are at. Is it possible she is just cooling off?

I am in Texas near the Gulf coast. In between Houston and Galveston. It has been warm the last week with a few lingering cool snaps. That could absolutely be an option! We are almost done with our open air coop for them which we are making due to our hot and humid climate in the summer. Mostly just cosmetic and nesting boxes are left and it is secure and has shaded areas, so I let them in there during the day to get used to the transition. At night they sleep in our large shed where their brooder was. Even then she does sleep on the ground in the shed. Maybe she just prefers a more cool shaded space. I didn’t consider that.
