So, I have a conundrum. I'm in a city where as many hens as you want are allowed, but not roosters.
I have one supposed pullet (we got all our chicks from the pullet bin) that I'm on the fence about being a cockerel or pullet. I tried to take a bunch of pictures of the chick in question, and some comparison shots to my other pullets that I got on the same day.
They are 10 weeks old. The one in question, "Jenny" , has a redder comb than the other ladies, has red points to its feathers and has started making a "crowing" like sound in the mornings. However the "crow" sounds more like a turkey gobble than a true crow, and it goes on from about 5 AM to 5:30ish and then we don't hear it for the rest of the day. (All the roosters I've been around happily crowed all day, but they were also adults). There are no spurs starting on its legs, and Jenny is the same height/weight as my largest pullet (that I am pretty sure is a pullet). Jenny is super sweet, loves to cuddle, and is BEST friends with one of my other pullets, to the point that they cry for each other when they can't directly see each other at all times. I'd hate to have to get rid of Jenny, but if she is a HE, then I have no choice!. So.. folks, do I have a dominant pullet, or a rooster in the making?
