EE sexing question ** PICS ADDED**

I have been eying those saddle feathers also, which made me think male. But they are very round which I've read can mean female. Hence the confusion.

The first I'm not sure on, but if I had to guess I'd say pullet. There is pink in the face, but no noticeable comb and her saddlefeathers aren't pointy/shiny.

However, it's not hard at all for the second. Definitely, undeniably male.

This is an awesome thread. I will bookmark Illia's wonderful post!
I vote #1 pullet, #2 cockerel.
And I'd like to take this one step further. In our flock, the black & white pullets are laying the blue eggs. The brown ones are laying green shades. Anyone else noticing that difference?

I hope that I'm not hijacking this post, but I have another comb question.

My two EE's seem to have completely different comb types. The lighter bird has what looks like a dull single comb while the darker one has what looks like a pink pea comb. I was assuming that because EE's are hybrids, these two birds were fertilized by different 'father' breeds and possibly were even laid by different hens. If that is the case, isn't comparing combs like comparing apples and oranges?

Is it possible to compare one bird to another with so much potential diversity? Or is brighter, pinker, bigger is a rooster the case regardless of genetics?

Am I making sense, or just overthinking?

That's because they are mutts, be definition. EE's, technically, can have any kind of comb.

Not necessarily. In any sort of comb, the males will get redder and probably much larger than the females. It's just a matter of how easy it is to tell between them. Some individual cockerels may mature later or earlier than others; I think this is a individual sort of thing. Lineage may have something to do with it; I would tend to guess if you cross your EE/Ameraucanas/Araucanas to make EE stock with a slow-maturing breed, the resulting offspring would be slower to mature.

1st is a hen 2nd is cockerel

I had a hen that looked a lot like your girl. The coloring on her feathers make them very deceiving but when you look close I'm sure they are not pointy like "boy" feathers
