Hi all,

We have about 20 chicks in our brooders right now but I am in LOVE with this one. My husband named him/her Minerva. Super friendly. Falls asleep in your hand. Blisses out when petted. What a doll. Age about 5 weeks is my guess. Comb is still pale and single as far as I can tell.

Questions:

1. Minerva has this unusual thing where some of their tail seems normal length and then some tailfeathers are much longer. All are kind of ratty at the moment, but the difference in length is weird to me. Is that any kind of sexing indicator? Or just a gangly baby indicator? :D

2. Minerva has some red(/brown?) on their shoulders. I hear this talked about but am not super clear on what or how much red to look for. Or whether the color means anything in Minerva's case. Could I get some information if y'all have time?

We are keeping Minerva either way (thank you, agricultural zoning) but want to know mostly for curiosity's sake. :) If a roo, he will definitely be replacing our current roo.

Thanks in advance.
