EEEeeeewwwwww....

My neighbor has watched her chicken catch a mouse in the coop several times! She usually takes them away and doesn't let them eat the mouse... but who knows what happens during the 20 other hours they're not being attended by people!!!! yuk!!

That's darn near cannabalism! I freak out when my DH wants to toss leftover chicken into the girl's dish.

yuck my old flock used to do the same thing baby birds frogs toads never saw them with a mouse though i think the most interesting one was my light bantam brahma taking on a big crawdad with huge pinchers that was the only fun one to watch

Yes, chickens are omnivores, meaning that they eat both plant products and animals. So, not only do they love grains and such, they will eat any other "animal" (bugs, mouse, baby bird) that they can swallow.

My initial revulsion faded after I realized... it was so young there was NO WAY it would have survived. For all I know it may have been dead already when the girls found it.

My son was upset but my husband explained it in a way I was quite impressed with. He said:
"The mom bird made an egg and the egg turned into a baby bird. But the baby fell out of the nest and wouldn't have lived. So Frodette ate the baby bird and now she is going to use it to make another egg."
He actually seemed quite pleased with that explanation. Plus we explained that that is how life works. Life eats other life. You have to eat living things to survive, even if they are plants they are still alive.. she was just doing what nature does.

The story would have been waaaayy different if it had been a cute little baby bird with feathers and all... but it was one of those ugly pink featherless things.

One of my rehomed hens ate a new chick once, needless to say she is now rehomed. Luckily my daughter didn't see it, but boy was it gross.

Chickens are meat eaters. I find it very interesting that people find it revolting when they see them acquiring and eating meat.
