Whoops. Well, I guess I hadnt looked at it that way. I am not trying to harass it, just get it away from my yard. Like I said, I love birds of prey and we never miss the raptor seminar at our local bird sanctuary. So if it comes down at one of my chickens and I am standing right there is it illegal to run at it yelling profanities? I just had to yell at it again today, as it was back in the same tree checking out the girls. *sigh* No more free ranging for them, I guess.

eta: PS thank you for the info

i wouldnt worry bout it,, if their there, then scream at them,,its a LONG ways between killing and scaring off.
and for the people who thinks its wrong to do so,,,,ask them what they would do when driving down the road and a hawk lands in front of them,,,,can you IMAGINE someone saying,, i veered off the road, and crashed my car with me and my kids in it,, because its illegal to harass a hawk. laws are cool,, but not ALWAYS right.

We have a lot of bald eagles here, in the winter they fish the open areas of the river. Wabasha, MN, six miles away from us has an "Eagle Center". As you drive down hwy 61 going up to Red Wing there was just about always people pulled over with binoculars watching the eagles.
I would NOT say that they wouldnt go after chickens but I havent heard of any problems.
The hawks on the other hand, seems like all the people I know that have chickens around here have to keep an eye out for them. My run is going to be covered.

i have a railroad in maine,, goes through a "bird sanctuary" all visitors must stay in the "allowed" places to take pictures and to watch the HUNDREDS of eagles, and osprey,,,,but I can stand right under their nests and take pics,,,hehehehe

and man are they something to watch,,,,,,is cool to see a big ole momma bald eagle feed her babies little pieces of fish and chipmunks,,,hehe

Hi, I have a picture for you but first some background. My husband got an outdoor hunting camera for christmas in '07. he so badly wanted to see if it worked and take pics of the coyotes and fox at my parents house. We waited )knew it wouldnt be long) and sure enough there was fresh road kill on my way to work one day. He picked it up and took it out to their house.
He set up the camera on a tree and left it. It started taking pics at 930am and by 700pm it was nothing left but skin on bones. The huge flock of ravens took care of most of it,
The deer was visited also by three eagles, all of which had their picture taken. I am showing you one of them. DH will not let me show the other two I had picked out. They involve a couple of fights between the two balds and an immature eagle.
I just thought you might find it interesting. Hope this works (cant find my printed instructions).

i bet the other pics are awsome too,,,have ya seen it when the crows, and eagles fight (not each other,,eagle against eagle...) when they lock talons, and fall till 1 gets scared and lets go (he's the looser)?
i watched 2 crows do it once when i was driving,,,,, almost went off the road,,hehehe,,, good thing theres not much traffic on side roads in maine,,haha

I saw it on the BBC documentary "The Life of Birds" by Sir David Attenborough. Excellent program. It showed a hawk that can find rodents by seeing their urine from the sky. Amazing.

I would love to see it in person, though. When I go to the local wildlife refuge in the winter, when all of the migratory birds are overwintering here, I can park my car and wait for the eagles to go over. They are HUGE, the shadow cast over me looks like what a pterydactyl (sp?) would have. Ducks and geese pop up from all over and scatter. They don't scatter like that for hawks or harriers, just for eagles.
