Eek!! Large Bird of Prey!!

Quote:
don't know about them fighting each other but have you ever seen a little bird go after a big crow or a hawk? I once saw each at different times on the same stretch of road. It was the oddest thing to see almost idential things with different birds, but it was spring & I guess they were after eggs/hatchlings? I too almost drove off the road seeing it. Oh & thanks for the chuckle on the other thread. It was closed before I could tell you I roared with laughter at the descriptions of a "hippie-Yankee".

so if you decide to "paintball em, or scare them" and their 1 of those birds,,,DONT let no one see ya,, or even tell anyone

EDIT to say,,, them are strict laws,,and carry stiff fines,,and i would never advise to break the law,,,,until it came to protecting my property,,,but then that said,,, you should do it in little steps,,dont go out and shoot it,,,geesh,, scare it away, set up "deterrents" and only "harm" if its harming your pets.

Whoops. Well, I guess I hadnt looked at it that way. I am not trying to harass it, just get it away from my yard. Like I said, I love birds of prey and we never miss the raptor seminar at our local bird sanctuary. So if it comes down at one of my chickens and I am standing right there is it illegal to run at it yelling profanities? I just had to yell at it again today, as it was back in the same tree checking out the girls. *sigh* No more free ranging for them, I guess.

eta: PS thank you for the info

Yes it's against the law to curse at those birds and the profanity at raptor police are watching the message boards.....

You probably just need to keep them under protection for a couple of weeks until the hawk moves on. In all likelihood if he can't get to them he won't stick around so close to them.

Catewin how can you tell the difference between the red shouldered hawk and the red tailed hawk? I've had a hawk in the trees & really I'm sure different ones over the years butit's always so hard to really see them even with the binocculars & then it's hard to describe them. I'd seen a video on you tube of one that I thought looked similar to the one I had recently in the trees and someone else said that was a "red shouldered hawk" but I thought I'd seen it on another occassion when you could actually see a red tail... How are you able to tell one ofrom the other? the one I was looking at was *so big* it was the size of the plastic decoy owl we have in the garden &/or real big....

Wow!! Thanks for the great pic Roosmom!!!

Have not seen my large feathered friend today. I hope that he is going to point his wings south and follow the rest of the migrating birds.

I just dont have the heart to put the girls in their run. They are gonna be in there for at least 7 months for winter, so I guess if I lose one to the eagle than so be it. You all are great, and thank you for your input. Also, thank you nnbreeder for the rules and regulations!

In my mom's last letter to me, she describe fishing along a river in Alaska. She was fishing for salmon, which she then smoked and canned before she was due to return, along with my father.
She described the amazing sight of grizzly on the opposite shore catching salmon and bald eagles swooping down and lifting huge salmon from the river.
I am not so sure that they would or could not do the same with a free ranging chicken. But, if I lived where you do, and could see such a sight, I might consider it worth the price of admission - as long as I had a flock that was a renewable resource.
Being a juvenile, it may not have set up a territory yet, you can hope I guess.
