This question is one I have always wanted to ask but wasn't sure if I wanted to know the answer. Well, now I know, and I wish I didn't. I have just decided to start washing the eggs before I put them in the cartons!

and to add to our knowledge. Roosters don't have penises right? So how does the sperm/mating thing happen? could i have gotten away with asking if roosters have c#%ks?

This discussion is starting to amaze me! Do you all wash your eggs? With what? I thought there was some kind of special coating/pore structure that was best left undisturbed....hmmmm.

Someone, please fill us in on the male apparatus. Sorta curious myself

I don't wash mine, if they are dirty (happens once in a great while) I will take a PT and wipe it off with a little water !!!

Really the egg never touches droppings while coming out of the hen. The 2nd link that was posted here is the best. Also there's been some vids on youtube of hens laying eggs. The hen has 2 tubes that meet at the same opening but when an egg is laid the top one partially slides out of the opening closing off the side that the waste comes down. The membrane comes completely out of the hen with the egg inside it and then the egg slides out. For that reason eggs can't be contaminated by feces until after they are laid and then get poop on.
