Egg bound emergeny--is there anyone who could talk me through this?

No, chicken wire isn't strong enough to keep out raccoons or dogs or coyotes. Have you tried posting a picture of your coop in another thread and asking for advice on how to predator proof your coop on a budget?

We have a combination of welded wire and chicken wire on our coop windows and run doors. The only place we've used hardware cloth is where our bachelor boys roost, in their own, outdoor pen. The entire perimeter of the coops/runs is protected by 18" pieces of corrugated metal (used), driven into the ground a foot, so it would take an extraordinary digger to make its way into the coops.

If you know of any old outbuildings in your area that are falling into ruin, think about asking the owners if you can salvage the corrugated metal sides or roof or some of the lumber. It might be enough to make your coop secure until you can afford hardware cloth.
