Egg bound hen. Please help ASAP!!!

If I have done my math correctly, there are 230mg of calcium in 1ml and like I said before, I think the dose for birds is 100-300mg per kilogram, so I think you could give her up to 500mg pretty safely (I have given 500mg in pill form to 500 gram birds). The label says IV, IP or SC, so you probably want to give it SC (under the skin). Best place to do that is where the wing meets the body. Have you ever given SC shots or fluids to a cat or dog? I'd probably give 2ml if she were mine.

I have given an injection into the breast of a fowl. It was not hard to do either.

I'm an old retired ICU nurse, and have forgotten a whole lot, but I would not give calcium into the breast muscle since it could accidentally be given into the heart by mistake, and if my memory serves me right, we used to give it into people's hearts during an arrest, and it can kill if given too fast. Personally I would give oral calcium, but if giving a shot find out what you are doing first.

Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook says 50-100mg/kg, not 100-300mg/kg, sorry, my bad! It also says that it can be given IM, but there is a note about diluting it first. I think I would stick with the subcutaneous route, maybe even give it orally.

Eggcessive, your right, when giving it IV it must be given slowly, but I seriously doubt that anyone that's given shots before would go through the breast into the heart.

I ended up giving her a 1.5 ml shot under her pectoral muscle last night. So far nothing has happened. She is still alive this morning, but no egg. I don't know if I can give her another shot or when. I am going to give her some crushed up human calcium pills in just a little bit. Anyone know if I can give her another shot and when?
