Egg bound hen

I hope your girl recovers and does well.

I have a question for you...did you happen to take a picture of her "thing" she laid?
Did it look like what Egg posted?
Does that "stuff" come out inside of an egg shell or just like the picture above?

I will wait a few days on the Baytril since my girl is seeming to slowly improve. I like knowing that if I buy the Baytril It will keep awhile though. Do you think I should provide any vitamin supplements on a daily basis if she continues to improve. Like liquid calcium for the rest of her life? That's just a thought. Maybe it would help prevent any more lash eggs or issues? I honestly don't care if she ever lays again. I only wanted chickens for the eggs when I got my ladies two years ago, but they have a way of stealing your heart and becoming the best of pets. KikisGirls in hindsight I should have taken a picture of what my hen laid but I was panicked so I forgot. It looked very similar to what Eggcessive posted except it was a little lighter in color and slightly smaller. It came out of her as is. No shell or anything covering it. The inside of it kind of looked like boiled chicken. I must say it was pretty disgusting. I pray I never have to deal with another lash egg again.

Thanks for the info.
i hope I never have to see something like that...I would freak out!

If her feed is a good brand and she is eating that well, she probably won't need daily vitamins after awhile. I would probably give them for the next week or so just to give her a boost. Also many of the high protein treats such as beef liver, plain yogurt, hamburger, tuna, and egg, are good sources of B or E vitamins, or calcium. I give my own hens vitamins once or twice a week, just for insurance. The plain yogurt is good for calcium, and layer feed should contain the daily required amount. If she stops laying eggs, she won't need extra calcium, so I would just note if she does lay eggs, that her shells are hard enough. It is easy to think of them as pets. Mine are between 3 and 6, and I have many that have stopped laying. They are very entertaining to watch and I enjoy their interactions, so I keep them around. Occasionally, I have to put one down to a serious issue so they don' t suffer.

I use Nature's best organic layer pellets. They sell it at my local Tractor Supply. Have you heard of it? Do you think that is a reputable company? Would you recommend any other brand? They have eaten it since they started laying. Also what brand of vitamins do you suggest? I want give my ladies the best care so I am open to any suggestions. I believe my hen still has some fight left in her and I will pray she recovers. I haven't lost a chicken yet, but I know there will come a day when one of them may need to be put down so they don't suffer.

I am happy to report my hen has eaten some wet layer feed, a grape, and three fat crickets. The weather has been very pleasant here in Texas so I let her get some sunshine and she has appreciated getting to stretch her legs. I have noticed though that after she had eaten the crickets she seemed to be jerking her body a little almost like a hiccup. Is this cause for concern or is it just because she is still having trouble digesting?

That looks to be a very good feed. Martha Stewart says she uses it, LOL. I use just a regular feed, not organic. not non-GMO, but it does have probiotics and is well balanced. I switch around from Purina or Nutrena, and have used Southern States until they closed here, but now use Kalmbach 17% layer. It's made in Ohio and is fairly reasonably priced. Most feeds are pretty good and well balanced. I just bought some Vionate vitamin powder, and have used Poultry Booster by Rooster Booster. Those need to be put into the feed and with a little water or vegetable oil added to adhere to the feed. I like Vitamins with Lactobacillus by Rooster Booster, which have vitamins, probiotics, and electrolytes, and they dissolve in the water with a cap full to a gallon. Rooster Booster has Poultry Cell and there is Poultry Nutri-Drench which are good to have, and the dose is 1 ml per pound of weight. Those 2 are about equal except the Nutri-Drench does not have riboflavin (B2) which is needed sometimes with deficiencies. I read labels a lot.

Just make sure that her crop is emptying overnight, and not slowing down. I would jerk if I ate a cricket, too, LOL.

Haha you reading labels has quite possibly saved my girls life. I will definitely try to get my hands on some of the rooster booster products. I have seen some of them at the store. Saffron is currently napping in the backyard acting fairly good. I am glad that my food checks out and I will check her crop in the morning. I know she isn't 100% but I have seen some improvement and I hope she continues to move forward. If you don't mind me asking what is your profession? Do you work for Backyard Chickens? I'm just curious lol. You are always able to respond so quickly. Thanks for that!

Saffron is a pretty name. What color leghorn is she? No, I'm not an employee of BYC. I think the moderators even work for free. I just have a big hobby of reading about chicken health. I have learned a ton here in 6 years of reading the threads. Just don't look at any of my early threads, LOL. I worked as a registered nurses for several decades. We live on a farm, and I was once tempted to go to vet school. I'm glad that I could help you. Many people like yourself who have experienced having a sick hen, will offer their experiences to others at some point. Any way, I hope Saffron keeps improving.
