Our pullet, Blondie, started laying on June 30th. She has been laying pretty consistently, only missing July 1st. On Monday, she was in the nest box for about 2 hours, but no egg was laid. Tuesday we again got two eggs, and I assumed it was her and didn't give it any thought. Yesterday, she did the in the nest box for 2 hours with no egg being laid. Anyway, we decided to check her out last night while we were doing our chicken inspections and I could feel what I "thought" was an egg low in her abdomen. (I would say with 75% certainty that that was what I was feeling.) Other than being in the nest box and not laying anything, she is acting normal. Eating, drinking, being her curious obnoxious self, running, flying, tail up, feathers smooth, and her vent does not show any signs of straining (no bulging, no discoloration). I wanted to give her some time today to see if any egg appears, but as of yet there hasn't been anything.

Am I just worried for nothing or is she egg bound? Would you try to move the egg along or just leave her until other symptoms present themselves? I don't really want to interfere if it isn't necessary.

I know that with her just starting to lay she may not be consistent, and I wouldn't be worried if she wasn't spending so much time in the nest box going through the motions.

Thanks!

A worried chicken mommy.

Watch her, I don't know too much about chickens and I keep learning but what I have seen in my own and reading on here seems as though she might not be I found this link particularly good reading on egg bound chickens. Seems to describe symptoms quite well. I have a young leghorn that seems to be egg bound but can't seem to feel anything. The vent area is terribly swollen, warm water allows it to return to normal size but then she starts pushing to get the egg out and swells up again. Only thing I can't seem to feel an egg so thinking might be soft shell. Any way here is the link;
