Egg Bound--------is this common

it's not really common, but because we might have tendency to overfeed our birds, which can create this problem...
Most of the time it's a new layer just starting up or at the beginning or the end of an established layer's cycle.
If you find a hen that's egg bound or you suspect that one is, you can bring her in and soak her in a warm bath for 20 minutes. This relaxes the muscles so that she can pass the egg easier.
Sometimes it's caused by a soft shelled egg. That means that she doesn't have enough calcium in her system. You can add Apple Cider Vinegar with the mother, the stuff that looks like Sangria, and give Oyster Shell calcium free choice. I bought my ACV at Whole Foods and the Oyster shell at Petsmart. Both of these together can help toughen up the shells.
Also feeding Black Oil Sunflower Seeds seems to help with being eggbound.

And sometimes its the header but not really the problem. So it will look like its happening more than it really is.

Thanks spottedcrow don't have the problem yet. Did a search before the post and saw some problems and not much in the way of help. The warm water thing came up but prevention is worth a lot too?

This site has a plethera of information !
