I have a 11 month old Asian black pullet. All of my girls had stopped laying for about two months and just recently started again. She is much like my RSL that lay just about every day.

On Monday I noticed that there was likely a soft shelled egg or shelless egg laid in the nesting box as it soiled two other eggs. There is a possibility an egg cracked but more likely a weak shell. The girls all seemed fine except for my RSL that has canker (meds are on the way) so I thought nothing of the egg as it happens sometimes.

On Tuesday I noticed my Asian black pullet slow moving, isolating herself, not eating or drinking much at all, pumping her tail while it was pointed down. I instantly thought egg bound and gave her a soak and some tums. I still did a once over and checked her crop, mouth, legs and body for injury etc. Everything checked out fine. Fast forward now to Wednesday morning and she still had not laid and seemed to be getting worse. She would barely walk and laid down basically all day. She would stumble to whatever spot she decided was a good resting spot and basically throw herself down vs slowing sit down (I know being egg bound can really be painful on nerves etc in the legs). I gave her another soak, crushed some tums, vitamin d and magnesium together and mixed in water to be able to syringe it to her. I went out for the 10th time yesterday around 6 to lock everything up and check on her again with my husband and she had laid on egg!! She got up, ate and drank a little, considered roosting but looked so discouraged and just went back and laid herself down. Very clearly still uncomfortable.

I just went out with more olive oil and my vitamin mash for her but I'm just confused. She laid an egg! Shouldn't she be feeling better? Am I missing something?

I'll also add that I started antibiotics not sure if that yolk in the nesting box was hers and caused some sort of infection?

Dont mind some of her messy feathers. Her "sister" pooped on her.
She is now isolated

No signs of canker. No excessive saliva, no head shaking or scratching and NOTHING abnormal in her mouth. I have not done an internal exam since she laid the last egg. I have no issues doing so I just wasnt sure if there's anything else to look for or do for her? Shes so uncomfortable when I handle her and I'm terrified to break an egg in her so I was holding off on that if possible.
Can you feel an egg still in there? No signs of canker in this chicken?

It sounds like she is having some real problems with her reproductive system. Things like egg bound, shell-less or odd eggs, impacted oviduct, internal laying can make them feel weak. I would try to get her taking some vitamins, and offer some watery chicken feed with a little cooked egg daily. A small amount of chopped liver or tuna can be used to tempt eating. Probiotics or a tsp of plain yogurt 2-3 days a week may be helpful.

Are there any vitamins outside of the calcium, magnesium and D that I should be providing her? I have yogurt and plenty of eggs to boil up for and have no issue getting some tuna. My step mother was told by her vet that some wet cat food is enticing and has great protein so I'll grab some of that as well.

Should I do another internal exam? I just feel so had for this poor girl. She is SO uncomfortable.

Should I give her a little pain reliever?

Good that there's no sign of canker! Her symptoms are a lot like what I saw in my hen. If she's egg bound you should be able to easily feel an egg without having to really try. Just slowly run your hand lightly down her front and between her legs like you're petting her.

I hope that's all it is!

PS I wouldn't do an internal exam. Being poked in the innards wasn't fun when I was in labor. I can't imagine it would be for a chicken either.

Exactly! That's why I've tried letting her be as much as possible. I didnt want anyone touching me or talking to me ... never mind sticking fingers where my 9lb babies were coming out of...

I just wish I could help her more!

If you check her and feel an egg the warm Epsom salt bath worked great for us. I kept her in the tub about 20 minutes then put her on a towel in a crate with the heating pad. She had an egg laid in half an hour and was back with the flock by morning.

Are you continuing antibiotics in case there's infection?

It is not that hard on them to insert a finger only one inch inside the bent to feel for a stuck egg or contents of a broken or collapsed egg. It takes a few seconds.

I would use a poultry tonic such as Poultry NutriDrench or Poultry Cell, or a dry mix such as Poultry Booster that can be added to feed with a couple of drops of oil to get it to stick to feed.

I'm going to give her a bath shortly. Finishing up breakfast/ snack with the kids and I'll bring her in for another soak. Thanks so much for your help

Edited to add that yes, I am continuing antibiotics!
