The FDA recently made most antibiotics available only by prescription, and Baytril though used for other farm animals and chickens around the world, is banned in chickens in the US. Most vets realize that some chickens are pets, and that we are usually not going to eat them if we name them and bring them into a vet in the first place. Anyway, many use Baytril for treating early egg yolk peritonitis because it may give the chickens a better quality of life, and help to extend their lives in some cases.
