Egg-bound or something worse? Advise please.

Thanks. Like I said in the original post, she is very swollen and I'm not feeling an egg so not sure :-(

She lifts her head a tiny bit and opens her eyes when I touch her. The swelling is worse.

Worth giving some calcium, also, just in case, if you can.

I watched the vids and mixed the powder with a little water and got it down her throat. She didn't like it but is so weak she didn't fight much. I'll wait a bit and try the same with some calcium mixed with water, at least I know she'll be getting a little water too.

I saw then she was very lethargic, comb flopping and dry looking, puffed up, and then she just sat there (very odd, she is usually super sassy). I looked her over and saw her bum was very crusty dirty and the area below the vent swollen. I immediately brought her inside to the "chicken hospital", trimmed the crusty bum feathers, gave her a warm epsum salt soak for 18 minutes, feeling the swollen area to see if I could feel an egg, which was inconclusive. The swollen area seems both squishy and firm? Not like watery-squishy.

Thank you for your response. Because I have 9 hens I don't know which eggs may be hers so I can't properly answer that, but there have been no abnormal eggs from any of them ever.

I do have human antibiotics, amoxocillin 500mg caps and cipro 500mg caps.

She is laying sort of on her side and breathing heavier, does not respond to dipping her beak in water. How would I administer?

The amoxocillin I have is powdered in a gel cap. What would you suggest?

If possible, get 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 into her in case she's having troubles expelling an egg or lash material.

You're noticing the swelling is getting worse as you speak, over the course of a day. I fear that this is not a good sign. It can be hard to know what's causing the swelling, whether she's internally laid, has some infection from lash or EYP. Could be the digestive system, fluid...so many things.

With her being unresponsive, take great care in getting anything into her. I'd also try drops of sugar water (1tsp sugar to 1cup water) to see if that brings her up a bit.

If the swelling is getting a lot bigger, it may be worth trying to see if any fluid could be drained to give her some relief. Draining can be risky and cause them to go into cardiac arrest so you'd have to use your judgement on that. Ideally before draining a bird needs hydrated, but most certainly afterward.

Either antibiotic could be used, but since Amoxicillin has been started, I would stick with that. Dosing is 57mg per pound of weight given orally twice a day for 7-10days.

She just died :-( When I went to put the dropper with amoxocillin down her throat, she was drooling and had clear sticky mucus inside her mouth, and I saw 2 little yellow spots on her throat (breathing hole), none of that was there yesterday. When I put the dropper in her throat she seemed to seize a tiny bit, moved the wings a tiny bit then she was gone.

My big question is, do I worry about the rest of my flock? What do I do? Thanks.

Also, could I have caused the mucus by giving her the powdered calcium and amoxocillin with the dropper?

I am so sorry, I had a hen in a similar situation. I am not sure about the spots in her throat and mucus, I am sure others will help you with that. The lump I would not worry about it affecting the other birds. Again, I am so sorry.

I’m so sorry that she passed. She sounded like she wasn’t doing well, so I am glad she is not suffering anymore.

No, I don’t think you caused any of this. Sometimes the mucus shows up when they pass away. I’m not sure why, but my hen had it, too.

The rest of your flock should be fine, but do check them over for yellow lesions in and around their beaks. Trich or wet fowl pox can cause that. To me it sounded like she had reproductive issues, though.
