I'd be very interested to know what this is. I've just lost one of my hens, who had a very swollen abdomen, but she was otherwise thin. I spend time with my chickens everyday, and she was acting normal until her legs went out from under her. I'm going to start shooing the roo out into the run and check each hen individually on a regular basis. He's a generally good tempered bird--he doesn't attack me, anyway--but don't mess with his hens. I feed them Nutrena, they have plenty of clear, clean water, they have a secure house with a nice run. They are almost 4 years old, and don't lay as much as they used to, but they are a good little flock. The day I found my hen staggering, I also found an egg, but not where she usually lays. i also found another egg the next day after i had separated her from the others. So the hens are laying sporadically now. I'd really like to know what caused my girl to swell up and die. Thanks for all your help.

Hi Everyone,

Well what a day,

After i got the men away, i wasn't left alone long enough to get the pics done.

This afternoon i realized that one of my cats Tessie Bloomers looked like she had had a stroke, i rush to the vets and we have had to put Tessie Bloomers down.

When she was about 4yrs old the vets said she had lumps on the back of her tongue, cutting them out would cause all sorts of problems with eating and we said no we didn't want them touched. We she is 12yrs old now and these lumps have caught up with her, once she had passed on we were able to pull her tongue forward and see this large tumour on the back of her tongue which the vet said will have gone up into her brain and effected her eye sight as we realized once in there that she was blind. All of this has happened to her this afternoon.

As mush as we will miss Tessie Bloomers i know we have done the right thing for her.

While we were waiting to make sure that Tessie Bloomers had definatly passed away i asked the vet about the chicken. She said it did sound rather weird, but she wasn't a bird vet as such but went to look up the book about the Caeca, it said among other things that infection and bah bah bah and Cocidia could effect it. that was enough for me, i didn't read the text myself, in my rush to get there i forgot to take my glasses, but just another effect the Cocidia can have on the birds.

Thank you all for your concern and help it has been very helpfull sharing with you all.

Wow sorry to hear about your kitty. I had to have Stanley put down after 17 wonderful years. The vet found a tumor the size of a baseball on a routine visit. We decided to let it run its course since he wasnt showing any kind of symptoms at all. Then one day I came home and he was SUPER affectionate. I remember thinking it was really strange because that wasnt his normal personality and that maybe he was saying good bye. I was right. At one in the morning he woke me up with a terrible meow and couldnt walk straight. Some freinds of mine came over and drove me to the vet to have him put down. I am a Christian and I firmly believe we will see our pets again. Our God is too wonderful to let such precious creatures perish for all eternity and theres a lot of Biblical evidence about animals being with us in Heaven. I hope you find out what happened to your chicken and I pray for your comfort in the loss of your kitty.

Hi,
I ws just curious by your post re, the screws. My chook is constantly squeaking and has done so for months. She eats poops and generally is chicken happy, but her breathing is definitely laboured. She gets picked on by all the others (as if they know something is up), so i have seperated her. It varies from slight squeaking to full blown throw her head back. I cant see anything in her mouth and have tried the olive oil approach. All the vets here prefer the easy method of putting something down. I dont. Have you an idea?
K
