Even if you are just raising for yourself, you don't want to pass that on to your next batch and create more issues and heartache. That's my thoughtsExactly, I hated loosing the girl but it was what I thought was best for my flock. I try & do whats best for my flock. I hatch & raise everything from my birds . I'm living & learning more everyday. I'm not looking for show quality just good layers. Its a challenge but its what I do.

I think it was a fluke with my last one, but the one that passed had broken 3 eggs inside her vent before contracting an infection. I tried controlling her light to prevent laying, and that worked until I thought we were out of the woods (swelling had gone down, no eggs in a week and a half) but a week after being back, she just up and died. No sign. She was looking well for a while. Only thing I can think of is infection. She was slow that morning.
