Egg bound tiny serama hen

I've been watching this closely as I'm having the exact same problem. My hen is a 7 month old Serama. She is one of the tiny ones. Maybe 13 ounces. Her eggs have been big for her size.. my avian vet is closed due to covid. So I'm watching your thread and have been trying the things you're trying... it's awful. Also the emergency vet here denied her because they said they dont know chickens.... 😪. I can barely fit my pinky in her vent but I've been doing the ky like you... and baths... nothing has worked. Trying to decide what to do in the morning.

So sorry to hear it anniep! :hugs

Is she able to poop at all? This is a good sign if she can. Keep her warm and in the dark and hydrated. I did eventually get the nerve to put my pinky finger in there- I couldn’t feel the egg though.

You didn’t mention it but assume you did give her calcium, right? Apparently that’s what helps them contract. My vet said that’s what she’ll be giving my hen a shot of to help. Is there anyway to contact your avian vet... there was a vet online I was able to speak with. I know it may not help, but sometimes just speaking to someone knowledgeable can help alleviate the stress and give some new ideas. There’s a video online of an avian vet showing how to help push... it’s risky, but it’s what I’ve been doing with my hen.

I do hope you’ll be able to relieve her soon. Keep calling around- I even called a nearby zoo. Of course it was closed because of the covid, but eventually something may be open and someone might be able to help. There’s a list of chicken vets online on this website... just call someone, even out of state. They might be able to give you some help. I was helping my hen push... we did make progress slowly, obviously not to the point we need but just be cautious. My thoughts were she’s going to pass anyway if I don’t try hard. I gave her lots of rest in between trials. Give electrolites like pedialyte or gadorade for energy, vitamins.. I gave my girl coconut water to keep her extra hydrated, but of course I realize that’s not a common product most households have off hand. Raw honey mixed in water might help to give her energy as well.

As far as covid-19 goes, I didn’t go in the office and spoke to the vet and assistant from inside my car. Then I put the carrier outside the door and then they picked her up. If you can get a hold of someone, perhaps they would be willing to do the same type of procedure. I’m pretty sure that’s safe considering the virus..just be sure to wipe down anything with bleach water and keep distance.

Well, just heard from the vet.. kinda not good news. They removed what was not one but two lumps of lash, not an egg. Unfortunately she got ripped inside during all of this and so they’ve given her antibiotics and pain reliever but the vet says 30% recovery rate..not good odds. She’s alive for now but chances of her passing within 24 hours is likely. 😕. I’ll be picking her up soon. Hopefully she will feel less stressed at home and can push past this. If she does, she’ll need an implant to stop her from making more eggs, which will be done at a later time.

I’ll keep posting.

She is home now. She is resting again in her heating pad cat cozy. She’s really out of it because of the drugs...sorry no pics but I do not want to disturb her at all. Doc wants me to call tomorrow to see if she survived. We’ll go from there. (By the way, she’s not prolapsed..just that there was some tearing which could get septic. She’s on anti-pain meds and antibiotics, but even with that she may not make it.

Asking for anyone to please continue praying for her. If she does recover, I already decided I‘ll be getting her the birth control implant for her later.

She’s gone.

Went into septis about 3pm today- Died sometime between 5 and 5:30pm.

Not sure if that was a better way to go or not. She was on a strong pain reliever. Hopefully it wasn’t as bad.

Anyway, thanks everyone ❤️ for the support.
