My 3 y/o ISA Brown hen, Buffy, has very much slowed down her laying (with some intermittent lengthy breaks). However, this past week, I noticed she'd go to the box like she had to lay without producing an egg. This made me nervous about internal laying, which I'd just lost my beloved BR to after a 6-month battle, but I'm not certain that's the issue. Buffy had done this occasionally before, but would always lay one by the next day or so--so I'd assumed her hormones are getting wonky as she gets older and that sometimes the mood strikes her to sit in the box.

However, this time, Buffy didn't produce an egg. For a few days in a row she'd act like she's trying to lay in the nest box without anything coming of it. Last night she decided to sleep in the nest box. Additionally, during this time her poop has become very runny/watery--sometimes almost pure, clear water with only small amounts of fecal matter. The fecal matter present is normally colored (not like what I've seen when dealing with EYP or internal laying in the past). I also noticed her crop is slow to empty--still having some contents in the morning (though not FULL and hard like it's impacted). This morning, I put her in the hospital pen to see if it'd finish emptying on its own and to see if she poops. It did go down with time, but no poop yet?

So, is it possible she's egg bound? Beyond the above symptoms, she's acting normal--energetic, eating, drinking, foraging, preening, etc. She's very vocal as she normally is. Intermittently I notice she's breathing heavier (not open-mouthed, but just that I can see her face inflate/deflate with her breathing) but it's not been consistent. She's not doing any tail pumping or acting like it's hard to get around or jump on things, nor is her gait/posture penguin-like. I just don't know what could be going on besides that.

I'm considering epsom soaks but I know she'd HATE it (I love her to death but she's definitely of the 'look but don't touch' variety). I currently have her on fish mox just in case internal laying/EYP might be an issue and I have her on cabergoline to prompt her to cease laying--but that may take some time to kick in. I'd like to get her dewormed (it's about that time) but I'm worried about throwing too many meds at her at once. Any advice is welcome and embraced!!

How long ago has she laid an egg? I would insert a finger into her vent and feel for an egg or obstruction. If you feel an egg offer a human calcium tablet orally. If you don’t feel a stuck egg, it is probably because she is laying internally and has a reproductive infection.

About a week ago. She'd been laying every few days and would do the sitting in box with no eggvthing here and there but would always lay one eventually.

I don't feel an egg and she doesn't seem like she's straining to lay or anything. She's bright and energetic... and angry at me for keeping her separated. I want to make sure her crop fully empties before letting her back out though.

I don't yet feel abnormal swelling like I did in my other internal layer, nor is her poop looking the same color as my hens who had eyp and/or internal laying (which tended towards milky white, yellowish/yolk colored and sixkly green). It's just brown and very watery.

Should I deworm her?
