We dont have swat gel, but we do have Vaseline, would that be okay to apply? Yeah, her abdomen is really full...and its like its making her unable to walk. I will go feed her and give her water first, because yesterday I did not put it in with her. Then we will see how her vent is doing...How is she doing?
You may find that you need to wash her again today to get more maggots off.
Her abdomen looks like it's quite fullish. She may have a reproductive problem or infection but hard to know.
Swat gel can be applied externally, but I would not put any inside the vent.
I'm sorry that you are dealing with this. You and your sister are doing the best you can to help, good job on tackling this!
I have been looking around for what she may have gotten. And it seems that if an egg breaks internally inside of a hen it can cause these symptoms, including abdominal swelling and ascites? And apparently the cure for THAT would be to soak the bird in warm water 2-3 times a day? I am not sure if an egg breaking internally would cause her to have paralysis though. She did seem like she was egg bound, so could the egg have broken? Would she still have hope if the egg broke inside her for 4-5 days? It does seem to make sense to me how an event might have led to another. However she is still pooping, so I dont know if thats normal. How is she doing?

Yes, and other diseases/conditions.And it seems that if an egg breaks internally inside of a hen it can cause these symptoms, including abdominal swelling and ascites?
Water belly generally is not contagious. A couple of common causes of fluid to build up in the abdomen are reproductive issues (cancer, peritonitis, Salpingitis, etc.) or organ dysfunction (heart failure, fatty liver disease, etc.).
If there is fluid in the abdomen, sometimes it can be drained to give the hen some relief for a short period of time There are risks to doing this - infection can be introduced, hens can go into shock and die. Possible there may not be fluid, but a mass or tumor instead.
If it's fluid, it can build back up, and of course whatever is causing it, is still there.
A detox may also help too. https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...-breath-if-you-hold-her.1284253/post-20750855
Sometimes a hen can live for a while longer when offered supportive care while others decline. No one can tell you how long she can live.
I'm very sorry that she's not doing well. I really stinks when a hen is sick.

If she had an egg broken inside, there very likely would have been a discharge coming from the vent that would have looked like egg and probably would still have "leakage" due to infection.I have been looking around for what she may have gotten. Yes, she drinks and eats a little. There are only a few maggots left on her vent, though! We will try to remove all of it by the end of today. If she had an egg broken inside, there very likely would have been a discharge coming from the vent that would have looked like egg and probably would still have "leakage" due to infection.
Unfortunately, it does sound like she's suffering from internal laying, peritonitis, cancer or similar for which there is no cure. Sometimes the swelling and/or masses can press against nerves causing the lameness/paralysis. The swelling/bloat could be some fluid as well. It's really hard to know unless you lose her and have a necropsy.
I'm really sorry. Is she able to eat or drink at all? Do you see any more maggots?
Well, if that is the case, at least we tried…If she had an egg broken inside, there very likely would have been a discharge coming from the vent that would have looked like egg and probably would still have "leakage" due to infection.

so, we ended up giving her one more bath and dried her…and then removed more maggots. By this point, I removed what looks like a cluster of eggs? Not too sure what it was, but it was on her feathers. Double checked that she had no wounds anywhere else, and there were only a few maggots left, about 7 of them. Can maggots survive in a paper container? If she had an egg broken inside, there very likely would have been a discharge coming from the vent that would have looked like egg and probably would still have "leakage" due to infection.

Yes actually, but I was not able to get 2 inches deep as I was afraid of breaking something, this was like 5 days ago on day one of her showing symptoms.Have you felt up inside her to check for a broken egg?
