Hola everyone. So….. About last week Saturday, I noticed my red Cochin (1 year 2 months) acting off. This went on for about 3 days, so I gave her a caclium pill. Not all of it though, as it was 1,000 mg, and I did not want to overdose. After about 2 days, I saw that she was starting to get better, just a bit, so I thought she would heal. Well…. not really. She is worse now, and has lost a lot of weight. Could she maybe be egg-bound? I’ve had egg bindess before, and she has pretty much the same symptoms. Her symptoms are:

1) Lethargic
2) Sleeps most of the time
3) Seems to have gotten paler
4) Her comb (the end of it) seems a little purple-ish/dark red…. Which she doesn’t have usually.
5) She is not eating anymore. She used to eat if I gave her a different feed, however, today, she would not.
6) Don’t think she has layed an egg in this span of time that she was sick.

Should I guve her a Calcium + Vitamin D supplement? I did that to my previous hen, and it worked. But these pills are different, they are quite big and have a plastic coating on them.

** Cannot post pics at the moment, as the browser won’t let me** (She doesn’t really look any different though, except for the paleness)

-Thanks for reading :)

Can you insert a clean or gloved finger into her vent about 2 inches to check for a stuck egg or obstruction? You can divide a tablet and give her 1/2 orally into her beak to swallow. Can you try to get some fluids into her by offering a small can or lid to her beak? SaveAChick electrolytes, Gatorade or other product would be good. It is possible that she could be suffering from a reproductive disorder or even cancer, but I would try to get her eating and drinking. How does her crop feel—empty and flat, full, hard, puffy? What do her poops look like?

1/2 pill of the 1,000 mg one?

I did see her drinking water. That was about 3 days ago though. I’ll start with water first, I have none of those things at the moment.

Last time I checked her crop, so… about 2-4 days ago…. It felt “normal” and mosly empty.

Poops, again, last time I saw, (This was at the beggining when I noticed she was sick), were “runny” and a greenish-brown color.

I hope she doesn’t have cancer. She is one of my favorites, and the tamest from my flock.

Check the crop again early in the morning before she has a chance to eat or drink, to see if it has emptied. If it hasn’t there may be a crop disorder. Have you gotten any fluids into her? Did you check inside her vent for a stuck egg? Here is a good link to read about crop disorders:

She did drink some water, by herself. Didn’t check for the egg. But I’ll check her crop in a few minutes.

Forgot to update, terribly sorry. Checked her crop. It is empty, but still feels “doughy”. I also did forget to mention in my frost post that she is losing balance. If i oucke her up, and then put her back down, she usually falls down to the left. I’ve also seen her (omly once) fall (again to the left) while walking. Hopefully nothing too serious. I checked for mites/lice for about the 5th time since she got “sick”. I hever saw anything, but this time, I saw just 2 little yellow-orangeish colored “bugs”. Lice perhaps? They are very tiny.
