My duck who is recooping from surgery now has a good size lump to the left of her thigh on her belly area. I just picked her up from swimming and noticed the lump. I didn't see it this morning. I know this might be really stupid question - but when they are egg bound what does it look like. Does anyone have any idea. It is about the size of a jaw breaker or a little larger. I put her back in a warm tub tonight, she appears to be trying to lay an egg. I will take her back to the vet tomorrow. Enough enough! : (

Since she is recovering from surgery, I think it is good to be cautious.

I have been told (I will learn from experience this summer, Lord willing) that eggs-in-progress can be felt in the belly for a time before they are laid. Things to watch are the vent (sometimes the egg can be seen just inside), signs of straining and discomfort. Make sure she is getting enough calcium (having read your posts, I am sure you have this covered), keep her swimming in warm water.

It is probably a bit early to be concerned about being eggbound (again, this is just from what I have read). The vet can probably help out much more, since they can see the duck.

Thanks for responding. It first I was thinking tumor....but then it dawned on me it could be an egg. I have been letting her swim in water at least three times during the day. Last night I put just a little warm water in the tub and she just layed there in it and it seemed to help her leg some, because when she went back into the pen she was standing and preening and put a little weight on it.

Took Angel to the vet and she isn't egg bound - it is an absess. We are going to watch it and see if it gets bigger then she will have to do something. Has anyone ever had an absess on their duck?

Abscess is better than egg bound because its treatable. I lost a duck last year to being egg bound and it was terrible for the duck. Good luck with your ducky.

I have had a pekin drake trated for a recurring abscess on his face. It started due to a sinus infection. I found him looking very sick at a local market- And bought him and took him straight to the vet. The abscess had also become infected and it did take 2 operations to clean it out and 5 months of antibiotics. But he is fine now. Sure hope your girls recovery is no where near as long as with my Harvey. He had to live inside the whole time

Wow... that is a long time. It seems to be a little bigger tonight. I have been letting her swim in warm water. I think her foot is slowly getting better. I believe we are going to be pretty attached when this nurse patient relationship comes to an end and she is all better.
