This morning my husband went to check on the chickens and all 12 were going about their normal business. This afternoon, he found one of my white chickens (amber link - about 10 mos old) dead in the laying bay, no egg but bloody bottom. Was she egg bound???? Was she sick? Any info would be greatly appreciated. This is our first group of gals and we love them dearly and don't want to see anymore leave us.

I'm sorry!

It's only guesswork, but eggbound is certainly a possibility, especially if you feel a lump near her vent that could be an egg that hadn't passed.

Some of our members do their own necropsy, to see if they can figure it out. You can also have a necropsy done by your state vet or ag college, usually for a small fee, or even free in some states. You might want to look into how to go about this in your state for future reference.
