Hi. 1 1/2 year old barred rock hen Annie seems otherwise fine but laid an egg this morning smeared with blood on 2/3rds of the shell. What does this mean and what, if anything, do I do for her? I've never had this happen before.

Thank you very much for any help/insights!
JJ

p.s. No one has been pecking at her. I only have her and her roo buddy. He normally does not bother her tho I noticed that there's been a little romancing that usually doesn't happen. Perhaps this is responsible? After this happens, you'd think she'd shun him but she still seems to want to hang out with him.

Before you freak out, Judy...these things happen...
Penny had one with blood on it...
Annie might've broken a blood vessel as the egg passed. As long as she's not actively bleeding from the vent, and it doesn't happen everytime, she'll be fine.

Thanks. I'm not too worried - yet anyway

How is your gal today? She and you have been on my mind. JJ

Thanks for your concern, Judy...she's still hanging in...I've been bringing her down the stairs so she doesn't have to land hard...She walks and I gave her some aspirin last night. I'm going to get some Polyvisol tomorrow...We're going to my inlaws so I'm going to have to bring her in...I just hope Obelisk won't be too big of a snotface and peck at her...

You have to check and see if any blood on her bum. If not don't worry about it. If so, seperate her or at least clean her up. If she's prolapsed, that's a whole other story. But I've had it happen from time to time and I only worry if the other chickens can see any blood because they will pick at her. Otherwise, it's pretty normal.

Thank you.

Hmmm... I notice that today she is sleeping a lot in broad daylight, head tucked around and under her feathers, BJ roo standing guard next to her.
I wasn't worried before but I'm considering being worried now!

(The egg this morning was perfect so I don't thing there's anything stuck....).

I'll be giving a good look to her hind quarters - there is not blood dripping or anything, but I'm going to look more closely - can't see a darned thing without getting up close and personal because she has gazillions of feathers back there!. It will stress her out so I will have treats ready to reward her. Wonder what would best soothe any soreness there......
