Hello, I just started incubating silkie chicken eggs 3 days ago and attached is a picture of the candling. Is this normal? I feel like the darker spot should be on the bottom no? Thank you!

no, that darker spot is the air cell where the chick will take its first breaths at hatch. It’s a pretty big air cell, hmmmm.

The air cell is normally at the large end. Re: candling, there won’t be much to really see for a few more days. At about day seven it should be really interesting in there.

Thanks so much that helps a lot!

I was just thinking.. having the candle lightsource under the egg isn't the best in my opinion. Not only will that be of little use when there is a baby filling up that space and blocking the light, but there is an awful lot of light leakage around the outside of the egg.

I use a hand held candler (like an LED torch) and always get the best results candling from the top and sides. Bonus - using a hand held means I do not need to remove the eggs from the cradle necessarily.
