Egg Carton Hatching Method Feedback *UPDATE*Tried It*Relults*

IMHO, everyone hatches different to each their own, who is to say anyones methods r right or wrong?? if someone don't like the methods i use to hatch for example, who cares?? it's not worth argueing over it's silly. if everyone did everything the same in this world it would be boring and misserable. i'll do it the way i want to hatch reguardless of someone else's opinions.

my job as a serigant momma hen is to care for those eggs anyway i can and improve hatch rate anyway i can. to help those babies be born healthy and on time and to be good stock the best that it can be without complications or stressing the babies or harming them so they grow up to be healthy birds to live a long life. shipping makes it worse for hatching eggs so extra time and methods should be made available to help that if possible. also if incubators r lacking ect since we r the parents bringing these babies into the world it is our job to compansate where lacking not the chicks being born, i see nothing wrong with that.

i'm sure many others would agree with that and feel the same way. we have not harmed them by useing this method only given them a better chance at survival and i don't see how that should be a bother to anyone else when i'm hatching them in my own home noone should have the right to dictate that except me. if it's not for u hay that's up to u but for me it is wonderful and does have major advantages so i'll keep useing this method and share my experiences.

people here are backyard breeders not a hatchery to comepair to that is absered cuz people here at byc don't have the million $ equipment a hatchery has and most r very new to hatching not experienced. they look to us for guidance with questions to help based on our hands on experience and knowledge not what a hatchery may or may not do that was not the question asked.

however, the only comparison i see is in the drawers they r upright to make more space and to get better hatches, same thing with cartons. i have 2 sportsmans and can hatch about 600 or so eggs at once. now tell me how i'm to do big hatches if they r not somehow standing on end? it's impossible that many eggs would never fit in the 2 hatchers at once and i'd have to do speratic hatches every time and not hatch at once big hatches. with this method i can hatch more at once and babies r making it out not only better but more alive with less complications than the old school method.

actually in a sence the methods r the same since they possition there eggs the same way in those drawers(open trays) technically we use homemade drawers and hatch the same ways.

I Hatched 9 chicks using the cartons which was very successful since I had put in 10 with 1 drowning in shell before pip.

I'm wondering if I had put too much water in the wells (hova) at hatch time and perhaps the pulp egg cartons were touching somehow as they were very damp to the touch. I had lined the bottom with shelf liner and that too was damp.

Have any of you had this happen?

Without a post mortem it is very difficult to be sure of why an individual chick failed to make it out of the shell. Even if it did suffocate, it's not easy to be sure this was because of the egg carton.

Some shells, for example, are thicker than others. This cause two problems. Firstly, more energy is needed from the chick to break, then exit the shell and secondly, the airspace will be smaller in the first place as less exaporation is likely to have taken place.

Some eggs just don't hatch. The chick could have had genetic problems, or any number of other issues.

Cardboard egg cartons could very easily feel damp in any high humidity situation. The cardboard can absorb moisture from the air without having to touch the water.

9 out of 10 hatching would be considered very successful by just about everybody

Good Job!

Then I'm pretty convinced that I had put an overflow of water in the wells and that's why the cartons got wet.

But no, I'm not blaming the cartons for drowning (or whichever way) the chick but mostly wondering why things were so damp.

Lesson learned for me, don't be so heavy with the water lol! I will most certainly use the cartons again. I had the cleanest hatch ever and the pips were so easy to see....I did check the late hatchers for pips on the bottom end but did not get any.

Thanks!

I just had a hatch of 48 eggs. All hatched but 6. The 6 died in shell but where facing the right way. This morning the last chick came out and I looked at my journel and found out that the next hatch was to be in hatcher 2 days ago!

With the egg cartons that I was using I was able to one handed clean out and wash the bactor in under 15 min. so I could get the eggs out of the 1202 and into the hatcher. With out 95% of the mess in the carton, I would still be cleaning.

I've never tryed it ... That said, I think I will due to I have been doing something simiular for quite awhile , Acually it started as a mistake I left eggs in the turner ( callducks) AND They all pipped in the Turner OPPPs but that hatch was 100% Did it again thinking "fluke" but nope got 90% Third trys the charm

and got 100% so now thats how I do all duck eggs and my hatchs have improved greatly. Hatching loose on there side in the bator I was lucky to get 50%. So, I'm going to give it a whirl and see how it goes ......

i got eggs to go in the hatcher tomarrow, will keep u posted how carton hatch goes. got in if i remember right for this one 4 cuckoo marans and 9 standard w/c black polish. i think that's all due to go in that hatch but will check tomarrow see if i missed any and when the next set goes in also.
