Is it okay to put a towel/rag down in the incubator so that the newly hatched birds have a soft place to lie down or walk on other than the wire mesh? I'm using the egg carton idea, but what about the other area? And do I need to consider circulation of air/humidity? I've got a still air incubator.

- that's why the stupid questions - thanks for any help/advice.
Same stuff Speckled Hen uses... I'm off to the store before it closes. I'm going to open the bator and make this change. But I've got them in the bathroom, so I'll run the shower for a while first.

I too was wondering about the obvious benefits???? Looking at this from an "if it ain't broke don't fix it" viewpoint I have to wonder. I just had a tray of 85 eggs of which 82 hatched & 3 didn't. I don't think egg cartons would have made much of a difference. If you want to do it fine w/me but I think it's just another fad based on less than scientific information. As the person I quoted points out the hatcheries, who make their living hatching eggs, use open trays. Since better hatches would improve their profit....well,you see where I'm going with this.

I usally dont hatch more than a dozen at a time. Which leaves lots of room for them to be rolled around. Maybe they dont get rolled around so much at the hatcheries because of the amount of eggs in the trays? If there are lots of eggs, the movement would be limited? Were there lots of room in between your eggs NYREDS? I find the egg carton method to work for me quite well. But again I do only have less than to about a dozen hatching at one time. I have my incubator full of pheasant eggs and they can barely move. So, I put them on their sides to hatch. Just to see what happens.

The OP of this thread asked for feedback on this method from those of us who having been trying it. That's what some of us tried to provide for her.....our experience with it and how it's been working for us.
