Egg carton or not?

Should i just lay eggs in the bottom of the bator on there sides or put them in egg cartons for lock down?Thanks for all your help.

I put them in a flat lid off an egg carton, or something similiar in height, to keep the hatch crud from getting the incubator dirty. Keeps hatchlings from knocking around eggs that aren't due yet too.
