I'm sorry to hear that. Were some of those eggs shipped? I would say to test what works and doesn't work, always try it on home eggs that are known to be fertile. Shipped eggs are a gamble for anyone, so it may not matter what you do and the result could go either way. Best wishes for a good hatch this time.

I have to agree with Hinkjc - sounds like it could be a combination of things - temp, humidity, shipped eggs, etc. If you've already tried the eggs laying down, try it in the carton this time and see if it helps. Cut a hole in the bottom of each cell and trim around the edges. If you don't get any better results, then analyze the temp and humidity and see if that could be the problem.

Have you opened the unhatched eggs to see if they were developed at all (on previous hatches)? That might also give you a key to what could be the problem.

Good luck with your hatch - hope this is a great one!! Let us know how it goes -

yea if you hatch five at a time. what about a bator full. 42 eggs.................

1 dozen was shipped eggs (duck eggs) the rest was from ones that were given to me from a swap and some of my own, over 85% of the time they developed but didnt hatch. The batch I got my 5 hatchlings out of was made up of a dozen of duck eggs and a dozen of mutt chicken eggs along with a few from my own, of all 5, the next batch a dozen of duck eggs dozen of chickens and None came out. Now im trying again with 8 Silkie eggs/showgirl, 7 Easter eggers, and I havnt even counted the duck eggs but im sure its over 2 dozen, So far I have 6 Silkies Alive and kicking and all 7 easter eggers! (lockdown wed) So hopefully a better hatch this time, No idea on how many of the duck eggs are alive, Wed when I take the turner out to remove a Rail or two for Lockdown with the chickens ill be candling them. Heres what I been trying to keep my stuff at

LG STILLAIR

Several of us are going to lockdown at the same time and several trying the cartons for the first time too....so make sure you visit and post pics on that thread too!!

Anyone hatching Dec 14th? Looking for hatching buddies for 1st hatch!

I am trying with the paper cartons...not sure about cutting out a hole at the bottom yet though. What are you doing?

I tried paper cartons with a hole in the bottom for my current hatch - nothing yet but we've been having temp probs - LG bator. Sigh.

I wouldn't use paper I think they suck up all the moisture and actually I took mine out of the cartons 3 days ago and they are starting to hatch! for 70% moisture you would almost have wet paper cartons

I hatched chicks this summer and had a lot of chicks from eggs laid on their sides that tried to hatch too soon and were too weak. This fall, I hatched a bunch of very healthy chicks hatch who had to rest for a day in their eggs because they were upright. I had no yolks and no chicks still attached to their shells by umbilicals.

I have hatched in paper cartons. They didn't get all that wet really. I would like to try plastic cartons next spring so I can wash and reuse them.
