When do their feet flatten out after hatch?
Edited: I'm sorry Dylansmom! I didn't see you had posted! I hope your procedure went well!!! Yes, all 3 made it out! The second two also have some curled toes/feet. But the first assisted one, can't seem to get his feet under him like the second two. He's laying on his side with legs/feet out to the side. When can I take him out of the incubator and examine him? And how long after hatch should I wait to put them in the brooder? They are so different from chicken chicks!

I generally leave them in for 24 hrs, but my incubator/hatcher is a foam hovabator, lots of room for them to try standing and walking. I think I would try to get your babies out as soon as they dry off a little. Get them in a larger brooder under heat, 95 degrees to start and keep an eye on #1 he may need a hobble brace or a burrito wrap like the one in KKB's pictures. These will usually help them get their legs under them if it doesn't happen naturally. Don't ya wish they all hatched like #3, I had one of those this year, thought he would need assistance for sure, and then he popped out before the other 3 he was in with, and they had pipped before him.

You can put them in the brooder after they are all dry and fluffed so to speak but be sure to keep the brooder temp up around 95-99 with a cool down area that they can get to if they get too hot and their water should be room temp not cold so they don't get chilled.. Be sure you give them their first few drinks when they go in their brooder and as I learned you have to show them how to eat as well!

Put something shiny in the water and they will peck at it and learn about water.

The chick with the splayed leg needs to be addressed asap. If it is flaying its legs and laying on its side it is not going to get better by itself. When a chick starts breathing air its bones start to harden and if the toes are left curled they too will set. Study the pics I posted, flatten the toes and tape them top and bottom, I use flexible fabric bandaids, and wrap the chick up in the burrito so the leg bone will be held in place and leave it overnight. Check it in the morning and if it isn't better wrap it back up for a few hours more. Make sure the feet are flat while you are wrapping the chick up.

So I've examined chick #1. His feet and toes seemed to have straightened out. But he will not put them under him. He puts them out to the side and lays down. I got them under him and rubbed his head and talked calmly to him but as soon as I move my hand he goes back to said position. Anybody have a clue?? Also his wing feathers are bent on one wing. Maybe from him trying to get into position? I tried to straighten them but he didnt like that. They look like they are drying out (dying??) at the bend. I'm just worried he won't be able to get to food or water. Any insight greatly appreciated.

Your little guy had a rough go of it, no question about that. At this point only time will tell, get him into a small rectangular container if you can. Use a washcloth or 2 to bolster him into a correct sitting position with his legs under him and his body upright. Those bent feathers will shed out in a couple of weeks and straight ones will grow in, so they are no concern. At this point we need to worry about the legs, and muscle control. Hopefully there is no neurological issue and he just needs time, however each year I lose at least one chick to what I call "failure to thrive", meaning I just don't know why they don't make it.

It really is amazing! My mom is a wild life rehabilitater and I've work with her many times. And you just know when you've tried but the animal is not going to make it. And I swear I really thought he be gone or I'd have to put him down this morning. Most dramatic recovery I have ever witnessed! I couldn't have even gotten this far without your help!
