Egg collecting, what's your favorite collection container?

We (my GF and I) use a basket I gave her for easter one year. It's funny when I take the commuter train up north to take my grama soem eggs... big 'ol guy like me carrying a basket full of eggs up grandma's house... I get alot of people asking me what in the world i'm doing. It's funny.

I visited my local Goodwill Store and picked up 3 wicker baskets that caught my eye, all different sizes. Right now I get no more than 3 eggs a day, so I planned to use the littlest basket, but keep forgetting to take it with me. When more of my flock are laying, I'll try out the other two baskets.

Then I saw a nice one on MPC, a smaller one, in "eggplant" purple. Oh, that made MY heart sing. Haven't bought it yet.... still have chicks in the "shopping cart" and am afraid to go back to MPC's site to click "checkout."

When I finish building the new coop, I have a peg on the wall where I will put my egg basket, so it's right there when I collect eggs. Right now, I have to go through a makeshift gate into my run to get to the current coops, and fumbling with that takes both hands. *sigh*

But yes, egg collecting is very personal. I want an egg basket for this task - especially when the whole flock of 7 are laying!

We have five girls and we check during the day but if there are a few eggs when I put the girls to bed I just put them in my bra. Hey, it works! I tried an outside pocket once but turned too quickly and broke them. Ick.

I tend to just hold them in my hands.. which works fine if I've got a lot at a time.. this morning, I had 7, and sort of juggled them all the way to the fridge... when I only have one, I often put it in my jacket/hoodie pocket... and then at least half the time, I end up forgetting, then hours later, I try to lift something, or I knock into something, and there is a sharp pain in my abdomen, and a warm wet feeling.. usually I think I'm dying... until I remember the stupid EGG...

Do you have a picture of one of the reed baskets you make? I would be very interested in seeing some. I really enjoy finding hand made items that are everyday useful, they add color to my day and I like to know someone devoted personal time to its creation.

...I must say this has been an enjoyable topic to follow, from reliving memories of family and continuing the thread

I have tried several different baskets.. Starting w/ a huge one (Newbie--thinking 10hens were gonna lay me a 1/2bushel basket full.. Then I purchased the little red basket, too big.. Then I purchased the one on the left, still too big, someone gave me the white plastic one.. and there were about 5 more that I took back to my favorite junk store....BUT the one I love is the little one in the middle.. It will hold 10 eggs easy, no rolling around and haven't broken one yet!

DH just grabs an egg carton.. that way he just slides it into the frig.. No handling them twice --he says!
