Just curious if anyone has ever put a camera in the coop. I am curious as to which chickens are laying and what color. I know what color the breed should lay, but am really interested in which are laying and the ones that are not. If you do use a camera, what type would be good to use.

We don’t use a camera, but if you go out often enough (every 30mins - an hour) you can learn on your own without a camera. That’s what I did, but that was for 7 layers only. This next flock is 12-13 layers. 😬

I am new to chickens and it looks like about half are laying right now. They are all about 20-22 weeks old. ( I have 28 total). I go to the coop about 4 times a day. I can go a little more often.

A lot of us have coop cams - here's a more recent threads on them: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/coop-camera.1367090/ .

My camera doesn't point to the nest boxes so not helpful on that front but I still know what every chicken's egg looks like with 100% certainty... because yes, I stand in the coop and watch them lay. I learn the laying schedule for each new layer so I can time when I need to be out to watch each one lay, to confirm which eggs belong to which bird.

That's really the best way.....lots of 'stalking'!

Good info! Thanks!
. As they get older, do they take less time to lay? I have 2 cuckoo marans that take at least an hour in the nesting boxes. The other chickens will not go until they are done. For some reason, they all want to use the same boxes. I have 6 nesting boxes for 28 chickens and they all use the same 2.

Some like to 'lounge' no matter their age.
Put a fake egg in every nest, that should help 'spread the love'.

I have 4 boxes and my 3 hens all use the same one (which happens to be the smallest box). It will be interesting to see what my new chicks do once they start laying. That will be at least another 6 maybe 8 layers.
