I am incubating eggs and one of the eggs has cracked, her wing is completely out in the open. This is my first time hatching, and I’m worried that she should not be exposed to the air / will dry out. She is 19 days today. Her wing is out of the egg, so I’m not sure how she can get into the proper position when she hatches. Should I try to cover the wing with something? Any advice would be appreciated.

Can you post a picture?
Yes of course. I’d like to add, this chick in particular was supposed to be used in research at a university, but ended up not being used so a friend involved in research asked if I’d like to keep her since I happen to be starting my first flock right now. So I took her home to hatch and give her a chance at life. Apparently at the lab there is a small (3 cm window, covered with a sort of clear material) cut in the egg to watch the development. I believe the large opening that happened was due to the chick somehow pushing this little window off, and then a large portion of the egg cracking and that’s how her entire wing came out, probably when she was switching positions. I know it’s a strange situation but I’d really hoping there’s a way to help her survive.

Thanks for the picture! I bet you're right and that's how that happened. Do you happen the know the date on which her egg was set?

I'm not seeing blood, which is a good sign. Can you tell whether her yolk is absorbed?Let me also post this link to my article on assisted hatching, which will help you evaluate whether to step in or not yet.

Thanks so much! I’m not sure about the yolk sac...she is going to be my first hatch, as my other eggs are still only 14 days. So I am just very inexperienced with all this. I really don’t know much about what they did with her at the lab, all they told me was that she was “incubated normally” and that she was 18 days when I brought her home yesterday...
