How can I stop my chickens from eating the eggs? I have a rooster that stands by the nest boxes waiting for the girls to lay then eats them before I can get to them. Wanting to build a nest box where the eggs roll into a protective area so they cant get to them but not sure the easiest way. He is not the only one doing this but just cant figure out which ones are.

egg eating is very hard to break almost impossible, once they know the "treats" are there they will not stop, I would make a seperate pen for the rooster and see if it does not stop after that, if not I would be making chicken soup

I know one way to try and stop it is to fill eggs with mustard and pepper and allow the chickens to eat it they absolutely hate it

Try scattering some oyster shell in the coop.

And never ever feed the empty egg shell back to them.

I had several egg eaters that were ex batt hens. I have no idea how many eggs they were eating but I could not bear to cull them after the life they had had. My mum and dad found an old fashioned website with a link - 10 ways to stop your hens egg eating (I wish we had the link) 1 of the tips was to feed bread and milk and another was to darken the nest boxes. We darkened the nest boxes and they have had 2 bowls of bread and UHT milk every day along with their normal ration of food and we are getting almost double eggs and no evidence of any eggs being eaten at all. It takes a few days but it is worth it.
